Staff Development Day: No School for Students on Mon., Oct. 8th
OxfordTeachersStaffDevelopment
Oxford teachers Michael Della Penna and Kathryn Cohen
While students enjoy a three day weekend, all staff will be teaming in different groups across our K-8 schools to develop professional expertise in the areas of Common Core Standards (see below) and our new data sharing system Illuminate, as well as to offer specialized training needed.

Middle school teachers in particular will be looking at how to use Illuminate to create formative assessments that give teachers regular feedback on student learning and informs their teaching.

At Berkeley High, teachers and staff will be grouped to work on:
  • Using the results of common standards-based pre-assessments to design instruction and plan curriculum;
  • Identifying overlap between current state standards and Common Core State Standards and aligning curriculum accordingly;
  • Deepening skills with Illuminate to track student progress, identify opportunities for acceleration, and identify students or standards that will need additional support and instruction; and
  • Continuing to work on safety and disaster planning.
What is Common Core?
Forty-five states have adopted the Common Core State Standards, including California.  Our district has a specialized team of educators who have become experts on Common Core Standards and are very excited about using these standards to facilitate learning.  The goal of Common Core is to prepare all students to be college and career ready with the skills they need to compete in the global economy. The standards articulate what students need to be taught across the K-12 grade levels starting in kindergarten.

Much of the thinking and rigor in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is already supported by curriculum and teaching practices in our schools.  The work is now to begin to align the teaching and standards taught in all of our classrooms with the Common Core Standards. By 2014-15, California expects to have moved from the current California Standards Test (CST) to a standardized test aligned with CCSS that more fully assesses student learning.

The California Department of Education started a good webpage with links and a short video to further explain CCSS.
