BHS Action Plan: Focus for this year
BHS Principal Pasquale Scuderi and Dean Daniel Roose outlined the areas of focus for this school year (part of the BHS School-wide Action Plan) at a presentation to the School Board last night: Academic Language, Math Standards, Common Assessments, Student Engagement, and Interventions.

Why are these action areas important?
Academic language fluency gives students access to high-level texts and supports the dynamic written work necessary for all students to find academic success and be well prepared for college and career.
Math teachers are focused on articulating the math standards that students need to know to move successfully from one math class to another. They will also concentrate on the use of instructional strategies proven to engage students in better understanding math concepts and acquiring skills.
Common assessments in multiple subjects means that teachers align their teaching of a standards based curriculum for their class with what they know about each student's understanding. They use pre- and post testing and in class assessments. Developing common assessments creates shared expectations for high quality teaching and rigorous learning across classrooms and grade levels and within departments, and reduces the risk of gaps in learning.
Interventions for students who need assistance to succeed are already available at BHS, but a more systematic approach is being newly implemented. It identifies students in need of the support services and counseling, connects them with resources, and tracks their progress to better serve students.
The idea behind all of these efforts is to improve student life and student engagement through a standards-based curriculum delivered and measured in innovative ways that provides successful pathways for all students.
Keep your eye on the A+ News for more updates on this important work.

Improved attendance at BHS and across District
Last year the increased focus on attendance at BHS resulted in improved attendance: from 92.6% in 2010-11 to 94.1% in 2011-12. This is equivalent to approximately 50 more BHS students in school every day and netted an increase of about $255,000 more dollars in attendance revenue.
Attendance continues to be tightly tracked at BHS this year. Rewards for attendance and consequences for missed periods are being implemented to keep students in class. For example, new this year: Students with 30 or more unexcused period absences will be blocked from school dances and work permits. [Ex: three days of unexcused absences (18 periods) and missing first and second period six times (12) can add up to 30 unexcused absences.] A student with 30 unexcused is required to attend Saturday school where missed homework and tutoring will be provided in order to reinstate privileges lost.
Improvement in attendance was also seen in the district-wide attendance rate of 95.3% this past spring, getting us closer to our stated goal of 96% attendance. Read our Attendance FAQ for more about attendance.
