New CST Data Shows Gap Closing
Elementary- In a span of two years, Berkeley elementary schools increased the percentage of proficient students in both
English and Math by 9%. - Student achievement data, as measured by the California Standards Test (CST), shows 72% of our students in grades 2-5 proficient or advanced in English Language Arts (ELA), and 79% proficient or advanced in Math.
- Preliminary 2012 test results disaggregated for ethnicity, show that 12% more African American and 12% more Latino students scored proficient or advanced in ELA than two years ago.
- The preliminary CST results in Math suggest an 11% gain for African American students and 8% gain for Latino students.
Middle & High School - The number of middle school students proficient or advanced in ELA increased by 10% over two years, while in Math the growth was 5%.
- African American students in grades 6-8 had the largest improvement in ELA of any subgroup with 16% more students proficient or advanced and 9% more in math over the same two years (2010 & 2012).
- BHS students saw a small increase in the number of students proficient and advanced in both ELA and Math with more students participating in the CST.
District and school API scores have been delayed by the state and are scheduled for release in October. However, individual students scores have already been mailed home. There will be a full report to the board on achievement results once the full set of data is available from the state. |

Tdap Alert - Not too early 6th Grade Students  California school immunization law requires ALL students entering 7th grade (and new students in 8-11) to show proof of a whooping cough (pertussis) booster shot, called Tdap, before entering school. Students who fail to meet this requirement when entering 7th grade are not allowed to start school. Help jump start this effort now by making sure your 6th grader gets his/her Tdap by the end of the school year. More information...
