Make learning part of your student's summer plans!
While there are many reasons teachers hesitate to say good-bye to their students for the summer, "summer slide" probably tops the list.
Statistics and data showing loss of learning during summer months (summer slide) means some of the gains some students have made this school year will be lost over the summer.
"Staying engaged through reading, playing board games, family dinners, library and museum visits as well as limiting computer and television screen times so children can be creative and play are all strategies that help prevent summer slide," says Christina Faulkner, the District's Director of Curriculum.
One way to keep reading is to Dream Big! this summer in the Berkeley Public Library Summer Reading Challenge. And, there are library volunteer opportunities for middle schoolers too!
Check out this article full of simple, fun summer learning featured last Sunday in the Chronicle. And, don't forget, K-5 parents can find your child's reading level on the year end report card and use it to create a book list at his/her just right reading level making book choices easier. Here's a helpful online resource for math games sponsored by Everyday Math. |

All of the District's incoming TWI kindergarteners for Fall 2013 will attend LeConte Elementary, giving the new LeConte principal and administrative team one year's time to implement a smooth transition. The Board and Superintendent agreed that a list of key implementation issues (transportation, siblings, afterschool program, etc.) that must be addressed during the transition will be identified at the June 27th Board Meeting.
