Reading by Third Grade is Critical to Student Success

Boys reading
Third grade is a pivotal year in literacy development.  By the end of the third grade students begin an important transition from learning to read to reading to learn.  Third grade reading is a significant indicator of future school success.

Teachers, literacy coaches and reading specialists in all of our elementary schools are working toward the goal of all students confidently reading grade level books by the end of the 3rd grade (Level P/Q).  Elementary report cards that just came out include both each individual student's reading level and the benchmark for the grade level.  Reading lists leveled from A to Z are available to help families choose those "just right books" that foster a love of reading.  You can find the leveled book lists here.

The 2020 Vision partnership has brought additional focus and resources to this city-wide goal of reading proficiency by the end of third grade. Now Berkeley joins a list of over 100 American communities committed to the three areas critical to the third grade reading goal:

With enrollment at elementary grades growing significantly over the past five years, and a demographic study showing it will continue to increase, classrooms must be created for a new generation of students.

Following a multi-year planning process that included regular meetings of the Site Construction Committee, the Board of Education approved the conceptual design of the Jefferson Elementary School Expansion and Modernization Project, to add classroom space and to modernize the school. Measure I, approved in 2010 by an overwhelming number of Berkeley voters, includes funding for this project. You can get more information here. For further information, send your questions or comments to the Project Manager, Mauricio Davila at madavila@tcco.com.
