Berkeley Public Schools
Former Willard graduates remember their alma mater with $250,000 gift for the Berkeley Public Schools

Berkeley Public School alumni Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone went on to Hollywood, New York, Saturday Night Live and Lonely Island fame, but never forgot Willard Middle School, the Berkeley school where they met. In an incredible gesture of generosity they have found a creative way to give back, in the form of a donation from Doritos of $250,000 to their favorite charity, the Berkeley Unified School District.

Budget & Ballot Measures - You can help

The Governor's preliminary January budget significantly reduces the amount of money for public school districts in California. And if the governor's package of taxes don't pass in November, there would be another very large reduction in December.

This comes at a particularly bad time for school districts, which are losing (or have lost) federal stimulus funds. In Berkeley, the budget reduction for 2012-13 just due to the lost of federal stimulus funds in $1.7 million. Couple this with reductions from the state including losses in transportation, mental health funding, and other items, the total budget gap for 2012 will be over $3 million.

February is African American History Month

Our schools celebrate African American
First African American Berkeley School teacher Ruth Acty with her Longfellow students in 1943
History Month in February with classroom and school-wide events.  This year, the School Board's resolution included a special recognition to honor the many contributions made by African American women in shaping American culture and history and the role of African American women in shaping Berkeley's own history.

Why are we assessing our students?

When schools were closed this past Monday, elementary teachers delved deeper into intervention strategies, how to support positive behaviors, and teaching English Learners.  In Back to Schoolall of these areas formative assessment (informs the teacher on student progress) is used to drive instruction.
