2020 Vision: Getting Ready For Kindergarten
Click on image to read.

Our district and its 2020 Vision partners are focusing on getting preschoolers ready for Kindergarten.

In addition to helpful tips for families (right), much work is being done behind the scenes:
  • A new collaborative hosted by Berkeley Alliance brings preschool providers and Kindergarten teachers together to share strategies for preparing students and families and supporting transitions into K;
  • As a result of the BUSD Kindergarten Task Force, all BUSD Kindergarten teachers now use common assessments at the start of school to better address new K student academic and social needs;
  • BUSD's Office of Family and Community Partnerships and Admissions Office help families get ready for kindergarten with recently completed parent education series for BUSD preschool parents and on-going workshops to support new families with enrollment process.
More about the work of the 2020 Vision Partnership is available here.
BHS Small School Name Change Reflects Importance of Science, Health, and Public Service Go Jackets!

This coming fall Berkeley High students will see a change in the name, course offerings, and academic focus of one of Berkeley High's long standing small schools: the Community Partnerships Academy (CPA) will become the Academy of Medicine and Public Service (AMPS). AMPS includes two pathways to college and career success, one in Health and one in Public Service.  This academy will be open for all grade levels starting in fall, 2012.

The revised course offerings include a renewed focus on science. Science is offered all four years in the following sequence: Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biological Health Science, and either an AP science elective, ROP Sports Medicine or Emergency Medical Careers.  The Public Service pathway also has a new elective offering, Psychology/Sociology.

"With multiple analysts projecting the most notable job growth to be in health care fields over the next decade, we believe that our efforts will yield a curriculum that is relevant and applicable to the world our students will enter into upon graduation from AMPS," said Principal Pasquale Scuderi.

The Academy of Medicine and Public Service will carry forward the CPA reputation for strong internship programs, embedded support for the college process, caring and committed teachers, integrated core classes, and inclusion of AP and honors content, classes and support.

For more information about the new AMPS program, contact Teacher Leader Annie Johnston at anniejohnston@berkeley.net.
