Though you can enroll a student in school anytime during the school year, the first Friday of February - 2/3/12 - is the first enrollment deadline for new students entering elementary and middle school for the 2012-13 school year. Our website has various webpages to help families navigate the enrollment process including an explanation of our student assignment system, a checklist of easy steps to follow for elementary and middle school enrollment, and Frequently Asked Questions about enrollment and waitlist procedures.  The Required Enrollment Documentation webpage includes information on the required documents for new student enrollment: the Parent Preference Form, an original birth certificate, and three current proofs of Berkeley residency.  You can also contact the Admissions Office via email at admissions@berkeley.net or call 644-6504 for assistance.

Disaster Exercise Receives High Scores
BUSD technology staff member Bradley Hilton works the Ham Radio System used to communicate with emergency services.

During a successful BUSD Disaster Exercise on November 15, 2011, the District activated the District Emergency Operations Center (EOC) simultaneously with a full school exercise at Cragmont Elementary School at 8:47 a.m. The exercise simulated a response to a 6.7 earthquake on the Hayward Fault, with severe damage within 10 mile radius of the epicenter. The simulation was conducted as if there were incidents in all of our schools; the EOC had to treat every school report/request with the same priority. In addition the exercise included an actual full school evacuation at Cragmont. A six-minute video short is available for viewing on the district homepage. The video shows what outside evaluators noted at the end of the exercise - Berkeley is well ahead of many other school districts in being prepared for handling a disaster. Next steps include school level communications to inform families about school safety procedures and reunification locations in the event of an emergency.
