2020 Vision: Did You Know?
Our schools, city, and community partners are working together to make a big impact in three areas critical to student success:
- Kindergarten Readiness for early opportunities, regular reading, and smooth transitions
- Reading Proficiency in 3rd Grade because literacy supports deeper learning in all subject areas
- Attendance & Truancy since students must be present to learn!
We'll be covering each of these more in depth in future editions of the A+ and on our website. |
District Saves Money for Taxpayers
Fiscal responsibility and good stewardship of public monies are essential to the continued strength of the Berkeley Unified School District. Several factors, including the district's improved credit rating, access to federal subsidies for construction bond interest, and lower interest rates by refinancing, have helped save money for local property taxpayers. It is estimated that the new, lower rates and federal subsidies will reduce expense to Berkeley taxpayers by at least $17 million dollars over the life of the bonds. |

Partners: Rosa Parks Elementary and Mills College
A 2-year $28,000 grant awarded to Rosa Parks teachers means teachers get more time together to study their students' reading process and understand students' learning needs. Working together and with scholar teachers from Mills College, Rosa Parks teachers are able to analyze and make changes in their teaching practices that align with what their students need.
Principal Paco Furlan is excited about the growing relationship between Rosa Parks teachers and the Mills Teacher Scholars program that these grant monies afford. "It is amazing to be able to collaborate with Mills College and infuse their expertise with ours. I am sure this will help our teachers understand their own teaching practice better and our students be more successful." Read more.

Protecting BHS Student Privacy
Under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2002, school districts are now required to allow the military the same access to high schools and student information as we do colleges, universities, or institutions of higher learning.
However, an "Opt Out" form allows high school students to exercise their right to privacy and, when signed and submitted, requires BHS to withhold student information from outside requests as specified on the form. In addition to being online, this form is being provided to BHS students in 2nd period classes in the coming weeks and can be signed by students and/or parents. Completed forms can be directed to Vice Principal Vernon Walton.
