New Safety Measures - BHS
SafetyOfficerJackets

It's not hard to notice that with the start of the new school year there are several new security measures in place at Berkeley High School.

Here are just a few of the most visible ones:

  • New "Visitors" entrance with signage on Allston Way requiring check in at the front desk;
  • BHS student IDs carried by all students at all times;
  • Security officers and campus monitors donning uniforms and monitoring the reduced entrances and exits;
  • BPD School Resource Officer on campus every day.

And some that are not so visible but equally powerful:

  • Students participating on the School Safety Committee with positivity and pride;
  • Five students on planning committee of eleven working to implement an anti-bullying curriculum;
  • Immediate reporting of robbery on campus to Berkeley Police;
  • Gun and violence prevention education in advisories this fall.

When asked about the new changes, Claudia, a sophomore at BHS, nonchalantly remarked, "I think it is good that we have more security guards getting students through the gates and to classes on time. Honestly, I have not been impacted by the changes."

Learn more about the work to keep our schools safe here. Or attend the next meeting of the Superintendent's AdHoc Safety Committee on Wednesday, September 28 (3:30-5pm) in Superintendent's Conference Room - Old City Hall.
