Chemturion Suits for NASA

Chemturion
ILC Chemturion Suits at USAMRIID

ILC Dover recently delivered Chemturion protective suits to Kennedy Space Center to support hazardous fuel handling operations.  These Level-A suits are also designed to protect the wearer from hazards including chemical & biological threats.  The Chemturion suits have been manufactured by ILC for decades and have been in use by the Centers of Disease Control, US Army, pharmaceutical companies, and others.  Through our application of state-of-the-art materials and ergonomic design, these commercial suits provide the highest level of protection and functionality possible.  ILC is also combining design and manufacturing technologies from Chemturions and the Extravehicular Activity Space Suits we produce for NASA, to develop affordable high performance suits for the commercial space community.

Airbag for Boeing CCDev Vehicle

ILC Dover delivered six airbag systems to The Boeing Company for

landing tests of its commercial crew capsule.  These airbags will provide protection of the capsule during land-landings and soften the impact for the occupants on the parachute decent to earth.  The work is partically funded by the NASA Commerical Crew Development (CCDev) program.  ILC has a long history of designing and building impact attenuating airbags having built the landing airbags for the Mars Pathfinder and Mars Exploration rovers (Spirit and Opportunity).  The airbags used for the CCDev tests were first developed by ILC for the Orion Capsule and were successfully tested at NASA Langley Research Center in 2008.

Flexible Isolators for Hazardous Materials Containment

ILC has delivered numerous flexible enclosures to the Pharmaceutical

Flex Enclosure
Flexible Enclosure for Hazardous Material Handling

manufacturing industry and government laboratories to permit the safe handling of hazardous chemical or biological materials.  These enclosures are manufactured from clear ArmorFlex® films that are tought chemically protective, and static dissipative to meet explosion-proof ratings.  They range in size from small gloveboxes, to room-sized assemblies with numerous glove stations or half-suits, and can be tailored to fit any isolation need.  Our enclosures can be used with slight positive or negative pressures for various forms of isolation (protecting the contents from the external environment or visa versa), and have multiple ports to facilitate safe transfer of items in and out of the enclosure without breaking containment.  Uses include containment of active pharmaceuticals, nano-materials, chemicals, biological material, and explosive materials.

Rigidizable Materials for Deployable Structures

ILC has demonstrated the use of shape memory polymer carbon composite

carbon truss

materials in highly packable structurally efficient truss structures in a program with NASA JPL.  These materials become soft when heated to enable compact packaging and deployment at the point of use; however, once cooled to operational temperatures they are rigid composite structures.  The key to our technology is that we can tightly compress these materials into their packed state and then deploy them without structural damage.  Therefore, tubes can be flattened and z-folded for maximum packing efficiency.  ILC has been developing these materials for over 10 years and have produced numerous structures including beams, trusses, and reflectors for NASA and DoD applications.
