Zeppelins Return to the US

ILC has been supplying airship envelopes to Zeppelin AG in Germany for 15 years.  Airship Ventures has purchased a zeppelin and is now providing tours of San Fransisco, Los Angeles and the Monterey Coast.  ILC was involved in the design of  the hull and ballonets and the materials from which they are manufactured.  Interfacing the softgoods to the rigid truss structure of the airship requires special skills to ensure performance and long life.

Inflatable Wings Enable Smart Munitions

ILC is supporting MBDA in the development of a GPS guided Tactical Grenade Extended Range (TiGER) vehicle.  Our lightweight inflatable aerostructure technology packs into small volumes for transport and is rapidly deployable.  These structures are scalable to any size and can be configured to fit multiple needs including gun launched and air-dropped systems.

Astronauts Deploy Tranquility Module on Space Station

NASA astronauts conducted 3 spacewalks during STS-130 to install the Tranquility module and cupola on the International Space Station.  Their suits and enhanced cut-resistant gloves performed flawlessly.  Cut protection is an issue on the ISS because of metal surface damage from small micrometeoroid and orbital debris impacts.  Special materials and design features in the gloves make them robust enough to protect astronauts in the harsh environment of space.

Inflatable Plug Helps DHS Protect Subway Systems

ILC Dover fabricated a full-scale demonstration unit under contract to West Virginia University for testing in their subway simulation structure in January.  DHS is developing the system to economically protect subway tunnels from flooding.  The 17 foot diameter plug consists of high strength coated Vectran™ fabrics to withstand the internal pressure of 15psi that is required to seal the tunnel.
