Family Medicine Residency Program Receives Award for Best Practices in Immunization
Baton Rouge General's Family Medicine Residency Program was selected as a recipient of a 2011 American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Foundation Pfizer Immunization Award in the category of "Best Practices."
The AAFP Foundation Pfizer Immunization Awards Program, which is supported by a grant from Pfizer, Inc., recognizes Family Medicine Residency programs that have achieved high or improved immunization rates in children or adults, or are implementing a system to increase immunization rates, especially in medically underserved populations.
In recognition of this achievement, the AAFP Foundation will award $10,000 to the Family Medicine Residency Program in addition to a $1,000 scholarship to send a resident to the 2011 AAFP National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students.
The Family Medicine Residency Program and other recipients of the 2011 AAFP Foundation Pfizer Immunization Awards will be recognized at the Conference for Directors of Family Medicine Residencies in June.
The "Best Practices" Award recognizes Family Medicine Residency programs that are achieving childhood or adult immunization rates, that meet or exceed the National Immunization Survey U.S. Overall rates, as measured within a 12-month time frame.
Dr. Yolonda Spooner, Medical Director of the Family Health Center, applied for the award. The Family Health Center, located one block from Baton Rouge General's Mid City campus, is a full-service facility designed to support the Family Medicine Residency Program and allows residents to treat patients of all ages and socioeconomic groups.
The other 2011 award categories include "Most Improved" and "System Implementation." In addition to Baton Rouge General's Family Medicine Residency Program, 15 other Family Medicine Residency programs across the nation received a 2011 AAFP Foundation Pfizer Immunization Award.
