Excellent Communication and Collaboration a Key Factor for Holistic Happiness
We all have heard about communication skills being paramount in any relationship, be it business or personal. Collaboration is equally as important. Imagine if you were an excellent communicator and then never took any action (insert your own political joke here). It would not take long for those around you to see you were all talk and no action.
Collaboration then is putting into action your communication or walking the talk side by side with others toward a common goal in which everyone has a voice.
Here are 5 ways I have found to be most effective:
- Be open and present to hear all perspectives of team members. Some may not have the most cutting edge ideas or might even be annoying on some level to you. Let that be. It is important at this stage that everyone have a voice in the process. A well run team will always get the best results by listening first.
- Be respectful of each other. If you do not like a direction someone is heading ask them to clarify their position for the group using open ended requests like, "tell me more about how your idea can be integrated into the current system." This way people can communicate without judgement and often times come to the same conclusions about their idea as you through processing it out loud. A bonus is when you find out that their idea has merit because you had an opportunity to hear it through!
- Fight the urge to take on other peoples functions or roles! This used to be a challenge for me. I would be working with my team and see something going on in another department and put in my two cents worth and before I knew it I was offering my opinion on everything. I was taking away peoples power in the roles of the company and it was not fair. It is better to coach people to do the best they can and allow them to have ownership in their job or part of the relationship.
- Celebrate as a team! Enjoy the camaraderie of a job well done. Acknowledge the success and plan to create solutions for the things that did not go well. If a team works well through communication and collaboration there is always something to celebrate.
- Thank the individual effort. This applies in all relationships, not just on the job. (when was the last time you thanked your loved one for taking out the trash?) We all like to be thanked for a job well done. It takes very little effort and the bonus is it makes you feel good too which are key components in living a balanced life and finding your holistic happiness.
