Hello from 4 D Acres
The Royal Wedding at 4 D Acres. On Friday while a lot of people were watching the Royal Wedding in England, we were watching our royal wedding here on the farm. Barney and Thunder were placed into the same pen. They are getting along just beautifully and what a wonderful couple they make.
 | | Emu exploding out of shell |
In addtion to the celebrating of this new pair, there was a break out, as an emu chick burst out into life here on this same day. This has been a regular occurence since then with Dee being kept very busy. Every two hours, she is checking in the incubator to see if another chick has pipped out of the eggshell. If so she moves it to the hatcher. This is where the chick rests for a while after the pip then it seems that they burst out of the shell.

After resting some more in the hatcher they are moved to the brooder box where they are monitored to make sure they eat, drink and poop. When we are sure they have met all three requirements they are then transferred to the brooder room. The chicks are kept in the brooder room for a short while prior to being finally placed in their grow out pen.

These first few weeks are critical in the life of the baby emu. It is our responsibility to make sure it stays warm, eats, drinks and gets plenty of exercise. From the brooder house they are moved to their pen outside. Heat lamps are still provided in their building so that the chicks stay warm on these cool spring nights. Growth is fast as they will be at their adult height in approximately 7 - 9 months.

It sure is fun to watch these chicks play, run, jump, tumble and play as they grow. |
