 Hello from all at 4 D Acres
This view is of a rain shower last summer looking east towards Missouri - just 7 miles away. This was covered by snow from Christmas eve until the 2nd week of January. It has warmed up just enough to make mud, lots of mud, and more boot sucking mud.
Earlier in the month it was bitterly cold, especially the first week of January with temps in the single digits and wind chills below zero. It was certainly nice to sit in front of the warm wood stove. Several evenings we sat by the wood stove and enjoyed emu summer sausage, cheese, and a cool drink. We call these "date" nights.
Everyone asks how the birds do in this cold weather. They do just fine. Here is a case in point. A pair of birds arrived last fall and not being used to our set up they did not use their building. When the 8" snowfall come in late December, this pair still laid outside. It wasn't until a day or two later a strong wind came in. You see, when the winds are strong enough along with bitter cold temperatures that is when emus seek shelter, which is what this pair finally did. We are happy to announce they are now enjoying their new home. Dee did venture out in the cold to take a few pictures of this pair with snow on their backs. She will share in a later issue this photo.
Eggs are now being stored in a couple of refrigerators so that we can "batch" hatch. Batch hatching is where we load the incubators with a large number of eggs that will hatch out within a few days of each other. Around the 1st of March the eggs will be loaded in the incubators. It takes 52 days to incubate an emu egg.
