Telemedicine is no longer "turning the corner," American Telemedicine Association (ATA) CEO Jon Linkous wrote in a recent blog post.
"For years we talked about reaching the point when telemedicine services became self-sustaining outside of temporary grants, going from promise to reality," wrote Linkous. "We have long passed the point of telemedicine being a new application. After eighteen years the corner is turned and I promise to put that phrase away." Linkous added that he is tired of having to "prove the case," and that a variety of telemedicine is now reimbursed by Medicare...more

Rural Americans experience more chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease than urban and suburban residents, have greater difficulties accessing high-quality care, and from 2014 millions more of them will likely participate in Medicaid and government-subsidized insurance, according to a new paper released today by the UnitedHealth Center for Health Reform & Modernization.
At the same time, more use of technology, such as broadband access that would increase telehealth solutions, can help ease strain on the system and further promote healthier outcomes in rural communities.
The paper, titled "Modernizing Rural Health Care: Coverage, Quality and Innovation," explores how health reform implementation, particularly health insurance expansion, will increase the need for innovative care models and points to technology and a stronger role for rural primary care as promising solutions. It also reports the results of a new Harris Interactive survey of 2,000 patients and more than 1,000 primary physicians in rural and urban areas.

AFHCAN has improved health care for Alaska Natives and Alaskans around the state and helps make patient care more efficient by cutting down on wait times to see specialists. It's also saved Alaskans and the Tribal Health System more than $6 million annually in travel expenses and strengthened ANTHC through telehealth services reimbursements.
The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium's (ANTHC) AFHCAN Telehealth Solutions telemedicine program recently hit a major landmark, recording its 100,000th telehealth case within the Alaska Tribal Health System.
AFHCAN technology allows health care professionals located at the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) in Anchorage to see and treat patients in Alaska's rural communities. AFHCAN began documenting cases in 2001.

Mission to Kenya
For its January 2011 mission to Kenya, PCCHF partnered with Guardian 24/7 to provide telemedicine technology to the most vulnerable patients in rural Kenya.
"One of our partners for this mission was Guardian 24/7. They provided us with telemedicine capability in the field, which is an incredible component of this mission. The use of telemedicine is certainly bringing something new and something that has never been done before into these village of Kenya," stated Dr. Chester.
This was the first mission that visited multiple sites. At the Nairobi, Narok, Laikipia and Malindi locations, PCCHF's volunteers, with the help of AMD's Dispatch Case and telemedicine peripherals, were able to consult with Guardian 24/7physicians located in the United States.
AMD's Dispatch Case, a light-weight; ruggedized; portable device, contains several telemedicine peripherals and its portability made it a perfect fit for these remote locations in Kenya.

"With the help of AMD's devices, PCCHF's team could literally set up a pop-up clinic at each site and in minutes, connect with Guardian 24/7's team of physicians in the U.S. and all of the doctors involved will share the same information and vital signs to treat patients," said Jonathan Frye, CEO of Guardian 24/7.
"Their little box (AMD's Dispatch Case) has turned out to be a very powerful tool for our mission," explained Chester. "We could have telemedicine conferences with doctors in the U.S. in the middle of Narok or from the coast of Malindi. These telemedicine consults make it so that it is just like we would be seeing a patient in the U.S."
While in Kenya, PCCHF's team of 20 medical volunteers completed over 1,000 medical cases and 60 surgeries.
