:: Gleanings
Overshadowed by God! God has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich empty away... --Luke 1:53
Bethlehem continues, as Christmas approaches, to be a troubled place. A high dividing wall surrounds, imprisoning many in the city of Jesus' birth.
As we remember Bethlehem this Christmas, any sentimental sense of Christmas falls away. Our world is in need of a Savior. Our world yearns for the Prince of Peace. Our world listens for the song of the angels to shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem.
Mary sings a song of praise to God who comforts the weary and feeds the poor. May her song be our song as we go to Bethlehem, as Christmas comes. I share this litany for Advent, written in reflection upon last month's ecumenical pilgrimage of women bishops to Palestine and Israel.
WE ARE ON OUR WAY TO BETHLEHEM, WHERE JESUS WILL BE BORN.
Mary, overshadowed by God, says, "I am your servant; let it be to me according to your word."
WE ARE ON OUR WAY TO BETHLEHEM, WHERE JESUS WILL BE BORN.
Mary and Joseph travel and arrive weary and unwelcomed.
WE ARE ON OUR WAY TO BETHLEHEM, WHERE JESUS WILL BE BORN.
Bethlehem this Advent is weary and anxious in the shadow of the high dividing wall.
WE ARE ON OUR WAY TO BETHLEHEM, WHERE JESUS WILL BE BORN.
We in the world have lost our way. We need a Savior and Shepherd and Healer.
OVERSHADOW THIS WORLD, O GOD, WITH YOUR POWER AND LOVE.
Come, Lord Jesus, and bring peace in Israel and Palestine, and in every broken place.
WE PRAY FOR YOUR BIRTHPLACE AS WE MAKE OUR WAY TO BETHLEHEM.
Shatter darkness with your light as you come to gather, heal and save us.
COME, LORD JESUS, PRINCE OF PEACE.
(Litany written by Bishop Hope Morgan Ward, The United Methodist Church)

Gifts of Hope this Christmas As you start looking for the perfect Christmas presents this year, think about giving gifts that will make a difference and be treasured long after the holiday passes. Choose a project from the Global Ministries gift catalog as an alternative to a traditional gift. Help vulnerable populations and support vital United Methodist mission projects all around the world while honoring someone special in your life. And remember, with a gift through The Advance, 100% of your donation reaches its intended mission and ministry. Give a meaningful gift to a loved one and bring the hope of Christ to the world. Here are just a few examples of gifts that you can give that will honor someone and change lives: - $25 will feed a child under age of 5 nutritious meal for 15 days in Somalia

- $75 will cover the purchase of books for a year for a theology student in Estonia
- $300 supports a young adult working in mission with marginalized communities throughout the world
- $500 will support a Covenant Relationship with a missionary who is offering hope and faith to God's people around the world

And there are many more ways you can help. Once you've made your donation, tell the honoree about your gift by using The Advance Alternative Giving cards that you can print from the webpage. This year give the special people in your life gifts of hope that will make a difference long after Christmas is over.

Candler Faculty Play Leading Role in Translating 'Best-Selling Book of All Time'
The Bible is the best-selling book of all time, but if surveys of biblical literacy in the United States are any indication, few Americans actually read their copy. The Common English Bible, a brand new translation that posted its half-millionth sale in November, aims to change those dismal statistics by making the biblical text more understandable while maintaining accuracy. Six members of Candler School of Theology's faculty worked on this translation. "Every translator thinks their translation is the most accurate, but I really feel that we got it right," said David Petersen, associate dean of faculty and academic affairs and Franklin N. Parker Professor of Old Testament at Candler. "The Common English Bible is accessible to a broader readership yet also has a greater breadth of scholarly investment than other versions." Petersen served on the Common English Bible's Board of Editors as Old Testament editor. Brent Strawn, associate professor of Old Testament, also served on the board as Hebrew associate editor. Between the two of them, they edited 33 of 39 Old Testament books in the Common English Bible. Link here to continue reading article.

The Blackwood Brothers, one of the most legendary names in Southern Gospel Music will be live and in concert in Stonewall UMC Wednesday night, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. to sing in connection with the Church's "Gospel & Gumbo" series which will receive a love offering to support the gospel music ministry of the Blackwood Brothers.
The Blackwood Brothers arose from the Ackerman, Mississippi area to international fame as they have ministered for Christ over 77 years through their gospel music ministry. Fresh from a tour of several northern states, Canada, and then Alabama, the group will stop by Stonewall UMC during their fall/winter tour which will take them on to Kentucky, Indiana and the west. Stonewall is their only Mississippi appearance.
Also featured that evening Mississippi Gulf Coast seafood gumbo prepared by Rev. Hall from a recipe given him by "the owner of the best seafood supply house in Biloxi, Mississippi."
