Bishop Ward's ePistle for September 22, 2011

Dreams & Visions

Your young shall dream dreams... -- Acts 2

A new version of The Dream Act is coming before Congress, and I ask for your prayers and support in leading United Methodist people in faithful witness, in accordance with the resolution on immigration passed by the 2011 Mississippi Annual Conference.

The Dream Act will encourage and support young people who have much to contribute in our national life and future. Immigrant children were brought to this country by no choice of their own. We believe that children should be supported rather than punished. We believe that immigrant children deserve an opportunity to legalize their status. They are young people with dreams of a fruitful life and demonstrated capacity for contributing to the strength of our nation.

The Bible abounds in stories of those who moved from one place to another. The Bible is clear in directing us to welcome the stranger, the sojourner, the foreigner in our midst. In the seeming complexity of the immigration in our own time, God's word continues to direct our words and actions. We remember that Jesus himself was born far from home and was a refugee child in Egypt.

Please visit these web links for ideas and resources as you lead your congregation in thinking about this important matter. I hope you will join me in contacting our Mississippi members of Congress, urging support of the Dream Act.

With gratitude for your generosity,

Hope Morgan Ward
