Joy to theWorld

You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of gladness with your presence. -- Acts 2

Methodist people gather annually for a time of worship, community and decision-making. As we gather for annual conference, we live again our distinctive polity, our distinctive organizing principles.

The annual conference is the basic unit of our church, reminding us that we are not independent but profoundly connected local churches. Together we are more, together we do more, together we have stronger impact, together we find mutual support; together we are energized for mission in the world.

Local churches are essential places of holy welcome, of proclamation and conversion and nurture, of service and mission. The annual conference exists to strengthen the local church and to provide a connection for ministry.

The theme of the 2011 Annual Conference Session is "Arise, Shine, Go: Joy to the World!" The Lord is come and is with us: this is the source of our joy. As we gather on this weekend of Pentecost, we anticipate a fresh wind of the Holy Spirit, God's latest gift to us!

With great anticipation,
Hope Morgan Ward

Mission Trip to Appalachia -- A Personal Witness

By Mary Marshall, Biloxi First UMCMary Marshall

What a blessing it was to return to my home state of Kentucky and work in mission alongside dedicated Christian servants! We spent the last week in May at Red Bird Mission in Queendale, KY. This Methodist mission was established 90 years ago with the opening of a Christian School and a medical clinic the following year. Today Red Bird is a major employer in the area operating a K-12 School, a medical clinic, dental clinic, craft store, community store, Senior Center, senior housing and many community outreach ministries such as the Work Camp we attended.

We are so grateful to friends and church members who donated lots of clothing, medical supplies, wheelchairs and walkers, baby blankets and toys for us to take to Red Bird. The Medical Clinic staff and the Community Store very much appreciated these gifts. We also thank everyone who supported our fundraisers, gave us donations and prayed for us while we were gone.

I worked in the mission office the first day and in the Community Store the rest of the week. My job involved processing donated clothing to be sold in the store. I cleaned, pressed, hung and tagged hundreds of garments -- from baby-onesies to blue jeans and bell-bottoms.

My teammates had to contend with rain everyday but still managed to make sorely needed repairs in a house that was way up a holler, over a raging creek and down a muddy lane. They removed water-damaged ceiling tiles in 3 rooms and put up, taped and floated sheetrock, took out old floor tiles, repaired the subfloor and installed roll vinyl in the kitchen and dining room. They also painted walls and ceilings, put up gutters and replaced some light fixtures. The homeowner was a coal miner but had injured his back and could no longer work. His wife was the cook at our work camp. They were precious people and so very kind to us.

I was humbled when asked to give one of the morning devotionals to the 70+ volunteers attending the work camp that week. The lush green hills and mountains of Appalachia were adorned with beautiful wildflowers and mountain laurel. Inspired by the majesty of God's handiwork I chose Psalm 121: 1-2 "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth." Our team also had a Bible Study each evening after dinner and we attended nightly devotionals given by the staff. The week was physically demanding but spiritually refreshing! Having worked closely with some 3,000 volunteers who made their temporary home at our church in the two years after Katrina I knew there was no way to thank them for their support and sacrifice. I promised them that, in their honor, I would strive to pay forward the same caring and kindness they showed the people of the MS Gulf Coast. This latest trip was my 5th mission trip since 2008. With God's blessing I hope to go on many more!
