 UMCOR Assessing
Relief Needs in Japan

Relief needs in Japan and elsewhere related to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami will be the focus of the United Methodist Committee on Relief, which is in contact with partners in the region, said Melissa Crutchfield, UMCOR executive for international disaster response.

The Rev. Cynthia Fierro Harvey, UMCOR's top executive, urged prayers for those affected by the disaster. "Once again, in
the wake of disaster and in the face of widespread need, we rely on the ever-expansive generosity of United Methodists and all people of goodwill to help us respond to those whose lives
have suddenly been turned upside down," she said.

Emergency response staff members at Church World Service are in contact with the agency's office in Bangkok, which is monitoring the situation in Japan and across the region. Tsunami warnings are in effect for North Sulawesi, Indonesia, and two local partners for CWS there have been contacted.

Donations can be made to Pacific Emergency, UMCOR Advance #3021317.

Easter People
and Easter Places

If then you are raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is...

-- Colossians 3:1

As Easter people, we are courageously and joyfully engaged in God's great purpose -- the new creation. Easter celebrates the renewal, redemption and rebirth of all things through Christ. The scriptural landscape for Easter is wide and spectacular -- a new heaven and a new earth!

On our first day in Ireland it rained through the sunlight. The rainbow was glorious. I uttered words of delight, pointing to it. An Irish child passing looked and then said dismissively, "We have them every day."

Let us be alive to the glory of Easter as it comes again, invading our world with victorious hope. Springtime and flowers and butterflies are glorious signs, pointing to holy energy, which cannot be contained. God is the source of a "new creation launched on a surprised world," to use the words of N. T. Wright.

This week I am at work with the Cabinet toward the announcement on Sunday of clergy and churches who will soon be in transition of leadership. This is annual work. It is also Easter work: each church and each clergy leader are called to be living signs of glorious hope. Let us pray for one another, in every beginning, ending and continuation. Christ, alive and victorious is with us!

With gratitude for the joy in Christ we share,
Hope Morgan Ward

United Methodists Release Documentary

to Help Fight Malaria "A Killer in the Dark" Chronicles Fight Against Disease

Imagine No Malaria, a ministry of The United Methodist Church, has produced a documentary to increase awareness and action against malaria, a disease that kills a child in Africa every 45 seconds.

The one-hour long television special will air on NBC affiliate stations nationwide beginning Sunday, May 1, 2011. "A Killer in the Dark: An Extraordinary Effort to Combat Malaria" conveys a powerful message that highlights the remarkable community-based efforts underway to fight malaria.

Hosted by actress Pauley Perrette, the program chronicles two mothers, one in the midwestern U.S., one in Africa. Both tuck their children into bed each night, both awake to two very different missions with one common goal: to wipe out this devastating disease.

"This film, 'A Killer in the Dark' illustrates how Imagine No Malaria is truly a mission to heal the sick and help those in need, empowering the people of Africa to achieve a sustainable victory over the disease," said the Rev. Larry Hollon, chief executive of United Methodist Communications. "We know malaria is preventable-and we know the more people know about the needless suffering it causes, the more passionately they get involved."

Much of the project was filmed on location in Africa, in the countries of Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone; all places where malaria accounts for a vast majority of child mortality. "A Killer in the Dark" documents malaria's impact on lives, its history and how the Imagine No Malaria campaign is creating a global movement to end deaths from the disease.

Interested viewers are encouraged to contact local affiliates to encourage the broadcast of this global health documentary.

Imagine the entire population of a city even larger than San Francisco wiped out every single year. What would the response be like? "You don't have to be a forensics expert to see the evidence," says Perrette, who plays Abby Sciuto on the hit drama NCIS. "It's time for the killing to stop."

"A Killer in the Dark" is presented by the National Council of Churches USA and was produced by United Methodist Communications as part of its Imagine No Malaria initiative.

The Parchman Hour Headed Back to Mississippi

For those who missed seeing a performance of The Parchman Hour by Mike Wiley Productions, you will get another chance. The group has been invited to present the play for as part of the 50th Anniversary of the 1961 Freedom Rides, marking a pivotal point in the evolution of the civil rights movement.

Over 100 Freedom Riders and their families will travel to Mississippi to reunite with their colleagues and tell their compelling stories about the struggle to eradicate racial segregation in interstate travel that changed the course of American history.

Youth and adults are invited to take part in the inspiring series of events that will take them to historically black colleges; Parchman Penitentiary, where Freedom Riders were imprisoned; the Fannie Lou Hamer Memorial; the site of Emmett Till's fateful encounter; houses of worship; community-based organizations; and civil rights legacy destinations. Columbus St. James UMC
Holds Pre-Easter Celebration

 Starkvillle 1

April 16 was filled with laughter and fun at St. James UMC. Columbus First Church in Columbus partnered with St. James to have a pre-Easter celebration, which included an egg hunt, family portraits, a space jump, and lunch. It was fun for everyone when Mother Goose showed up to take pictures with the children and the laughter and squeals could not be matched when the kids started the egg hunt.

Starkville 2Rev. Fred Brown, pastor of St. James, stated he hoped this would be the first of many such gatherings. The celebration was open to everyone in the community and free to all. There was a tremendous turnout with at least 100 children, half of which were just community children.
Starkville 3
Rev. Tony Proctor, associate pastor at Columbus First, took the pictures and printed them out to give away on the spot. Even youth from the churches showed up to help hide eggs and paint faces. Overall, this celebration was a great outreach program/celebration for the entire community. Everyone could be seen talking, smiling and just having fun. The churches hope to make this an annual event.
