Watch This Space Each Week
for Nudge Nudge
This week's Nudge is by Rev. Adam Gordon, Associate Pastor, Booneville First United Methodist Church and Director of the Wesley Foundation at NEMCC. "Tell someone that they can read the signs of the stock market and in that way become rich, and people will do it in a New York minute. Tell someone that they can read the signs of the Spirit and become spiritually rich, and they yawn and walk away. We are more prone to read signs of someone's economic and social status than to read signs of the divine at play in people's lives...We live in an attention-deficit culture more adept at gaining attention than at paying attention, furiously beating bushes that advance our interests while not paying attention to burning bushes that showcase God's activities." (Sweet, Nudge, 53) As we find ourselves in the thick of one the holiest seasons of the Protestant church, Lent is a time that we are most prone to focus on what we have done wrong -- our sinful lives -- that separate us from God's ever-present love-centered reconciliation. It is a place that we, the church, find ourselves in as we are invited to "observe a holy Lent" during our Ash Wednesday services. To say that our self-examination during Lent is a wrong place to be would be a horribly inaccurate interpretation of the purpose of our Lenten practices. However, we can run the risk of focusing so much on ourselves that we lose sight of the reconnecting work that God is doing through Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit's power in Lent. Surely, paying attention to our relationships with God and our neighbors are at the heart of our faith in Lent. And it is in the act of paying attention that we find ourselves most vulnerable and other-focused; a practice that is also at the center of evangelism. In his book, Nudge: Awakening Each Other to the God Who's Already There, Leonard Sweet suggests that when we pay attention to others and to God, we remove ourselves from the center of attention; honoring the "you-ness" and "their-ness" (54) of each other, giving God the attention that God is worthy of. Most noticeably, this practice of paying attention is what we also call, "prayer." Who would have thought that prayer was central to evangelism? Unfortunately, Sweet says, not many do. On Saturday, April 2, we will have an opportunity to dig into this fresh take on paying-attention-evangelism at the annual Evangelism Summit. Leonard Sweet will be at Christ UMC in Jackson, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Can't make it to Jackson? Don't worry! You can still experience this event. We are excited to offer live streaming to seven different locations throughout the conference. Register now for a fee of only $10 at the location of your choice.

UMCOR Assessing Relief Needs in Japan
Relief needs in Japan and elsewhere related to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami will be the focus of the United Methodist Committee on Relief, which is in contact with partners in the region, said Melissa Crutchfield, UMCOR executive for international disaster response.
The Rev. Cynthia Fierro Harvey, UMCOR's top executive, urged prayers for those affected by the disaster. "Once again, in the wake of disaster and in the face of widespread need, we rely on the ever-expansive generosity of United Methodists and all people of goodwill to help us respond to those whose lives have suddenly been turned upside down," she said.
Emergency response staff members at Church World Service are in contact with the agency's office in Bangkok, which is monitoring the situation in Japan and across the region. Tsunami warnings are in effect for North Sulawesi, Indonesia, and two local partners for CWS there have been contacted.
Donations can be made to Pacific Emergency, UMCOR Advance #3021317.

:: Gleanings
A Wellspring of Lenten Generosity The water I give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life. -- John 4:14 During Lent, we join United Methodist everywhere in generosity through The One Great Hour of Sharing. For over 55 years, The One Great Hour of Sharing has made it possible for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to keep its promise that every gift goes 100 percent to those in need. It is the privilege of every United Methodist Church to invite and receive this offering so that our healing and restoring presence in the world might be vital and strong. We in Mississippi have received much through UMCOR. Recovery work continues in the wake of the tornadoes of 2010. Six years after Hurricane Katrina, recovery work continues in the Seashore District. Our participation in The One Great Hour of Sharing is a way of saying thank you -- to God and to our church. Our generosity will comfort and help others, just as we have been comforted and helped. Thank you for your participation during Lent in The One Great Hour of Sharing. Resources are available by linking here. With gratitude for our partnership in Christ's ministry,
Hope Morgan Ward

A Witness for Christ in Japan: Methodist Mission in Historical Perspective By Christie House and Elliott Wright, General Board of Global MinistriesUnited Methodist response to the March 11 earthquake in Japan puts the spotlight on a rich mission history that began 135 years ago. The General Board of Global Ministries and the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) are working in the crisis with church organizations that continue a mission story that opened in 1873, the year the first Methodist missionary arrived in Japan. Methodism is a major stream in the United Church of Japan, established by the merger of 33 denominations during World War II. The UCCJ's Relief Committee was among the early responders to humanitarian needs created by the earthquake and tsunami in March. The story is both rich and complex, conditioned by political and cultural factors. Some of the complexity comes from the fact that multiple Methodist denominations entered Japan in the late 19th century. Today, Global Ministries has nine missionaries and a variety of other personnel and volunteers in Japan. The work includes education, services for minorities and seafarers, ministry with women and children, and the training of persons from Asia and Africa in sustainable agriculture. These ministries are coordinated with Japanese mission partners, including the UCCJ. Links continue with several church-founded universities, including three with roots in what is today United Methodist Women. To read more link here.

Methodist Healthcare Announces New Minimally Invasive Thyroid Surgery
 | Julie Morganelli pictured with her dog Chloe is very pleased with the results from her minimally invasive thyroidectomy that left virtually no scar on her neck |
No one wants a visible reminder of a surgery, and thanks to medical advances, technology now gives surgeons a way to leave virtually no scar on the front of the neck after thyroid surgery.
"With recent advancements in endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques it is possible to use endoscopes to visualize the interior of the neck and take the thyroid gland out through a very small incision measuring just about an inch in length," explained Sandeep Samant, M.D., a head and neck surgeon at Methodist University Hospital. "By making such a small incision in the neck, it is barely visible and you only really notice it if you know to look for a scar."
Before the minimally invasive approach, the incision left after a thyroid surgery was three inches or longer, which was quite obvious since it went across almost the entire front of the neck.
There are several reasons that require patients to have one or both thyroid glands removed, including cancerous and benign nodules, large glands, or overactive glands. Julie Morganelli had a nodule on her right thyroid gland removed, which turned out to be benign. "The thing I like the most about this procedure is that the incision is very, very small," said Morganelli.
With the smaller incision, most patients get to go home the same day. Morganelli did go home the same day and had a quick recovery, which is typical. "I had the surgery on a Wednesday and I was able to return to work on Monday," she said.
Dr. Samant says not everyone is a candidate for minimally invasive thyroidectomy. If a patient is sick, has a very large gland or has cancer extending beyond the gland, that patient is not a candidate for same day surgery.
