Special Offering Student

United Methodist Student Day is one of The United Methodist Church's six churchwide Special Sundays with offerings. Congregations are encouraged to celebrate United Methodist Student Day November 28, 2010.

As of Sept. 30, 2010, the most recent financial data available, the United Methodist Student Day offering received $131,128. That is about 27 percent of last year's total receipts ($484,188). Receipts for the three previous years were
$554,252 (2008), $602,309 (2007)
and $594,179 (2006).

The situation is critical. United Methodist Student Day gives scholarships and loans to students attending United Methodist-related and other accredited colleges
and universities.

Your congregation's extravagant generosity through the United Methodist Student Day offering eases the financial burden for deserving college students. Your gifts can prepare them to unite
faith with knowledge.

Watch and hear Josh Union and other United Methodist Student Day recipients as they share their hopes and dreams.

Give ThanksBishop Ward

Give thanks with a grateful heart,
give thanks to the Holy One,
give thanks because he's given Jesus Christ his Son.
And now let the weak say, I am strong;"
let the poor say, "I am rich because of what the Lord has done for us."
Give thanks.
-- Henry Smith, 1978

This beautiful song is perfect for this long holiday weekend that includes both Thanksgiving and the First Sunday in Advent. It is a song of thanksgiving and a song of great anticipation.

The text from which the hymn is drawn is Luke 1:49-53. In a surprising visit, angels bring astonishing good news. Mary is overwhelmed, overshadowed by the purpose of God.

In what could have been a terrifying moment, the angel says, "Fear not!"

Mary sings her response, praising God and giving thanks for divine mercy. She calls herself simply a servant of the Lord.

Within the holy and powerful purpose of God, the weak are made strong and the poor are made rich!

Whether our thanksgiving feast is sparse or abundant, God is with us. Whether our loved ones are near and many or few and far, God is with us.

May Mary's song be our song this Thanksgiving, and always.

With gratitude for the life we share in Christ,

Hope Morgan Ward

Gospel Music Legends Coming to Corinth
By Cheryl Farr, New Albany District CommunicatorGospel and Gumbo image

One of the most legendary names in Southern gospel music history, the Blackwood Brothers, will be live and in concert in Corinth Friday night, December 3, at Christ UMC, 3161 Shiloh Road. The historic group arose from the Ackerman area to international fame as they ministered for Christ through their gospel music. Legend has it a young Elvis Presley auditioned for the Blackwood Brothers in 1953, but was turned down. Still, Elvis asked the group to sing at his Mother's funeral and, although away on tour, a plane was chartered and they flew back to sing!

Christ Church is bringing the Blackwood Brothers Quartet, now based in Memphis, to Corinth to sing in connection with the church's Gospel & Gumbo series. Love offerings will be received to support local and global mission ministries of Christ Church as well as the music ministry of the Blackwood Brothers.

"You cannot have a real discussion about the history of gospel music without including the name 'Blackwood' in the first paragraph," said Rev. James Hall, pastor at Christ UMC. "Christ is excited about bringing these gospel legends to our hometown!"

Hall prepares the gumbo for the event from a recipe he was given from a Coast seafood supplier. "I cook authentic Mississippi Gulf Coast seafood gumbo from a recipe given to me by the owner of the best seafood supply house in Biloxi, Mississippi," he said. But, gumbo is not the whole food story. The Christ Cooks will have many other foods and desserts to offer starting at 5 p.m. and serving until about 7 p.m.

Unique wooden crosses, made as a mission of love by a member of the church, will be on display and for sale the night of the event and would make excellent Christmas gifts.

The opening act features Witt Lucas and Thomas Elam, two local talents who offer to the Lord a compelling blend of contemporary Christian music. They will perform beginning at 6 p.m.

Hall says he expects a full house so all are encouraged to come early, enjoy a good meal, pick out their gift crosses, and relax in Christ's beautiful sanctuary for a "good night with the Lord!"
January 10 is Deadline to Apply for
2011 Human Relations Day Grant

Jan. 10 is the deadline to apply for a Human Relations Day Grant from the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society (GBCS). The grants are to support ministries that respond to non-violent young offenders through education, advocacy or leadership training and development.

Grant funds are raised through The United Methodist Church's Human Relations Day Special Sunday each year. Special Sundays are an opportunity for United Methodist churches to celebrate the denomination's connectional work. This day of social action and raising awareness supports the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program.

Human Relations Day happens the Sunday immediately following the observance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday: Jan. 16 next year. The United Methodist Book of Discipline describes Human Relations Day as a call to "the Church to recognize the right of all God's children in realizing their potential as human beings in relationship with each other."

To qualify for a Human Relations Day grant, the applicant must be either a United Methodist local church, district, annual conference or other affiliated group/organization; or an ecumenical group/organization working with and through at least one United Methodist agency or organization, whose program affects at least one United Methodist local church.

Grant applications are available at Human Relations Day Grant, or by contacting Marvlyn Scott (mscott@umc-gbcs.org), in the office of Education & Leadership Formation, 202-488-5643.

For more information, contact the Rev. Neal Christie (nchristie@umc-gbcs.org), assistant general secretary, Education & Leadership Formation, 202-488-5611.

Mt. Carmel and St. Luke Participant
Spend a Day in Ministry to Community

On Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, the Five Practices leadership team of Mt. Carmel and St. Luke UM churches in the Waynesboro area of the Hattiesburg District, along with other church members, met to do mission work.

The morning began at 6:30 a.m. with a free rummage sale. All the items were free to anyone who wanted them. At approximately 10 a.m. the church members participated in a Stop the Violence Crime Walk that was going on in the town. After the walk, members went back to the church and packed 11 Thanksgiving baskets and delivered them to needy people in the community. Members enjoyed delivering the baskets; they had a short devotion with the families. The baskets included a turkey and all the items needed to make dressing and side items for a wonderful Thanksgiving meal.

The presence of the Lord was certainly felt by everyone. Church members said it was a humbling experience and they can't wait to do it again.
:: Cares and Concerns

A memorial service and celebration of the life of Irma McBroom Harris, widow of Rev. David A. Harris, was held November 20 at Wesley UMC, Tupelo. Our prayers go to the Harris family.

Please remember Rev. Wayne Bass, his family and the church families in your prayers. Wayne is pastor of St. Paul and St. John UMCs in Hattiesburg. He is currently undergoing outpatient treatments at the VA Hospital in Jackson for a malignant tumor, but will be an in-patient for eight weeks after the Thanksgiving holiday. He will be allowed to come home on the weekends. Please ask for God's healing, strength and grace during this difficult time.
