Joy to the World!

Let every heart prepare him room
-- Isaac Watts

Dr. Dana Robert, Professor of the History of Christian Mission, teaches me to think of Joy to the World as a mission hymn!

In this conference year, we live with the theme, "Arise, Shine, Go!"  The 2011 Annual Conference will gather around this theme:  "Joy to the World:  Arise, Shine, Go!"

Today is the third day of 10-Fold, an on-line experience of mission.  I hope you are in the midst of it!  If not, go to 10-fold.org and join the celebration of learning and witness.  Tonight, the on-line offering will be the Consecration Service for New Missionaries where I have the honor of preaching from Isaiah 6:1-8, "Here I Am, Send Me!"

I hope that you will create in your church an experience of study and reflection using Dr. Robert's book, "Joy to the World."  The study opens to us the history of Christian mission with scriptural roots and contemporary implications.  We in Mississippi find ourselves in the book, in the fifth chapter that focuses on mission in Vancleave following Hurricane Katrina.

Christmas is ten weeks away.  May our generosity in the world be 10-Fold as every church in the annual conference participates in mission through The Advance.  In 2009, we went from the bottom of the Southeastern Jurisdiction to the top in Advance participation!  Onward, into these 10 weeks of harvest and thanksgiving and hope and joy.

With gratitude for the unfolding of this time in our lives,
Hope Morgan Ward

A Message from Tim Crisler,
MS Conference Lay Leader

At our forthcoming 2011 Annual Conference we will elect delegates to the 2012 General and Jurisdictional Conferences. Service to the church as a delegate is an honor and a sacred responsibility requiring a commitment of prayer, time, study, discussing, reading, and listening. Both General and Jurisdictional Conferences will have agenda filled with issues that are important to the church.

Participation in these conferences provides opportunities to shape the official policies of the church; to experience high moments of worship; to meet United Methodists from throughout the world; and to celebrate many successful ministries of United Methodism.

If you wish to be considered by the laity at annual conference for election as a delegate and if you want your information included in a booklet of those laity who also wish to be considered, please complete the nomination form and mail it by February 28, 2011, to the Mississippi Conference Board of Laity, Post Office Box 1147, Jackson, MS 39215. Nicaraguan Methodist Church Approved for a Stop Hunger Now Shipment
By Paige Swaim-Presley, Seashore District Communicator

The Nicaraguan Methodist Church has been approved for a Stop Hunger Now Shipment of over 285,000 meals for 2011 and has been placed on the waiting list for 2010. Rev. David Newton, MS Conference UMVIM Coordinator reports $4,000 to $6,000 is needed for the transport of meals for distribution through the Nicaraguan Methodist Church. This shipment comes at an especially opportune time since Nicaragua's Methodist church is losing one of their primary sponsors at the end of 2010.

"Every church within the Nicaraguan Methodist connection distributes meals to  needy children with a goal of five times per week," said Newton. "This nutritionally complete meal is a means of demonstrating the love of Christ to thousands of children and their families. Please give generously and forward this message to others."

Our God is a God of covenantal love, and we are a covenantal people. Out of this comes a deep commitment to be in ministry and mission with Christians all over the world. The Seashore District, in particular, lives in covenant with the Nicaraguan Methodist Church as they seek to provide meals to the hungry -- of whom there are many -- as well as food for the soul.

If you would like to help the Nicaraguan Methodist Church receive this food, please mail your donation to the MS Conference Office. Checks should be payable to "The Mississippi Annual Conference of the UMC," with the memo section designated "022-600 - SHN - Nicaragua." Excess funds will be used to fund a shipment in 2011.

For more information email umvim@mississippi-umc.org.

RIM Formation Seminar
By Lisa Garvin, Director of Ministerial Services

"Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always..."

-- Luke 18.1

So begins this week's Gospel reading and so begins this week for 57 Residents in Ministry.

All provisional members of the Conference are together this week (Monday through Wednesday) for the annual RIM Formation Seminar. The Formation Seminar is a continuing education event for clergy who have completed their theological education and are in the first three years under appointment as a commissioned minister. This year's Formation Seminar is a retreat focused on the spiritual formation of the pastor.

Guiding the staff at the Center for Ministry and drawing from Chester P. Michael and Marie C. Norrisey's book, Prayer and Temperament: Different Prayer Forms for Different Personality Types, these new clergy persons will explore various ways of drawing close to and connecting with God for themselves and for those with whom they serve in local congregations and extension ministries. Some practices will be familiar and comfortable. Others will be new and challenging. In their time together they will learn more about themselves and about you -- churches, laity, colleagues -- and your needs for spiritual growth. All that they learn and experience in this time together is a resource for their ministries across the Conference.

At the same time, this retreat is designed to provide rest and space for new clergy to be away from the demands of ministry and to connect with the One who called them to the work of making disciples. Tonight at 7 p.m., these 57 residents and their leaders will enter into a time of silence for twelve hours. Please hold them each in your prayers as they seek to draw closer to the Source of Life and Calling. May they return to their ministries revived and renewed and better equipped to lead the People of God.
