Peace with Justice Sunday May 30, 2010
Jessica, a shy 12-year-old, is just one of the sensitive
souls Susan Stouffer encounters at Peace Camp sessions at United University
Church in Los Angeles.
"Peace Kids" like Jessica graduate from this unique camp
-- funded in part with Peace with Justice Sunday offering money -- inspired to
teach their friends to be kind to each other and to treat the earth -- and its
people -- with respect.
The offering on this Special Sunday empowers United
Methodists to work for peace, love and compassion for God's children
everywhere.
Call 888-346-3862 today to order envelopes and other
resources so your congregation can participate in this churchwide offering.
They will be sent at no cost to your church!

Sunday by Sunday See, I am making all things new. -- Revelation 21:5
Sunday by Sunday, as we worship, we see God at work among
us, making all things new.
As I prepare to preach in local churches, the texts come
alive in my heart, carrying me along, saying things to me I have not heard
before. There is always a fresh word to me and I am renewed as I come to
share with you.
I thank these churches for the opportunity to preach on
Sunday mornings January through April in this year, 2010. -

In each place there is warm welcome. In each place
there is unique history. In each place there is a unique surrounding
mission field. In each place there is a spiritual personality. In
each place there is great love.
It is good to remember that the Annual Conference is the
basic unit of The United Methodist Church, existing to strengthen local
churches for making disciples of Jesus Christ, connecting them in Christ's
ministry. Unless I am out of the state, it is a priority for me to be
with you in your churches, for that is the place where God is working through
the Holy Spirit to make all things new.
May you be blessed in your ministry this week and
always,
Hope

Mississippi Church Leaders Assess Damages Following Tornadoes
After 30 tornadoes cut a swath of destruction across
Mississippi, Bishop Hope Morgan Ward reported that conference officials were
working with impacted communities to assess damage and identify places for
recovery ministries. "We pray for those who have lost loved ones in the
storm, for all who have lost their homes and possessions, for all whose
livelihood is impacted by the loss of business, and for all who will be helping
with the recovery and rebuilding efforts across Mississippi," she said.
Conference Disaster Response leaders met with Bishop Ward and
conference staff this week and began organizing the recovery effort. A call center is being established from
the Conference office in Jackson for scheduling volunteer support and to
receive calls for help. Calls are
now being accepted by calling 866-647-7486 or alternatively 601-354-0515 x21.
Rev. Wayne Napier, Conference Disaster Response Coordinator
is currently working with churches and volunteer crews in the area in the
clearing debris and also to locate host sites for volunteers. If you are interested
in helping in this phase of the work, please contact him at wbnapier@live.com. Bishop Ward has also announced Robert Sharp, MS UM Katrina
Recovery coordinator has been tapped to lead the recovery efforts bringing his
knowledge and expertise in recovery after Hurricane Katrina to the effort.
Information on the recovery efforts will be updated
weekly through an online Disaster Response update and information will also be
posted on the Conference website www.mississippi-umc.org, click on 2010 Tornado Recovery.

Bond UMC Shares
"Christ's Light" in Community
Rev. Larry Pickering and members of Bond UMC-Wiggins
gathered on a beautiful Saturday morning in April to pair up and be
assigned the area of Bond they would visit. One of the members had
prepared a flyer with church service times to pass out with nightlights that
had a label-Bond UMC Sharing Christ's Light. When the teams returned, they were
encouraged from the 50+ doors they knocked on. |
Friars Point UMC
shares "Key to the Kingdom"
Rev. James Cox shares with us that the members of Friars
Point U.M.C. have taken the Knock on 9 concept one step further. In
addition to knocking on many doors church members distributed 400 flyers
advertising their first Revival in many years. This little church on its
2008 Statistical Report averaged 15 in worship.
During the revival the
average attendance was 62 each night, with one adult profession of faith. The church has also started a program they call, "The Key to the
Kingdom." They have designed a brochure that includes a picture of
the church, its brief history and worship times. It also contains the
Biblical keys to Salvation and a prayer asking Christ to come into our hearts. A hole is punched in one corner of the
brochure, an old key is attached and each church member gives one to everyone
they meet -- to make disciples for Jesus Christ.
