:: Gleanings
God is Making All Things New
I gathered with the leaders of a church named Bethany.
As a conversation starter I asked them about their name. No one in the
group was present at the naming. No one recalled giving much thought to
it. We explored the scripture together, looking for Bethany. In
time, someone commented, "Bethany appears to be the place where Jesus felt at
home."
Then, someone else mused, "It would be wonderful if our church were a place where
Jesus feels at home?"
Jesus' love for this family -- Mary and Martha and Lazarus -- is obvious.
Their home in Bethany is a place of retreat, of companionship, of
refreshment. In this place, we see how God acts to make all things new.
Tears flow and perfume is poured out. Both are acts of love and
devotion. Jesus weeps by Lazarus' tomb. Mary pours out costly
perfume and anoints the feet of Jesus. As Jesus weeps, death and grief is
palpable. The smell of the perfume fills the air and Jesus' own death is
foreshadowed.
The stories are woven together artfully. Mary is identified in the second
verse of the preceding chapter (John 11:2) as "the one who anointed the Lord
with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair." By intent, the stories
intertwine and enrich one another: the stories explore love and grief,
devotion and resistance, death and resurrection.
Some of the religious leaders are distressed by the raising of Lazarus.
They resist, afraid of losing their own power and influence: "If we let
him go on like this, everyone will believe in him..." (John 11:48).
Those who see Mary's extravagant act of devotion are immediately
critical: "Why did she not sell the perfume and give it to the poor?"
The foreboding of the suffering and death of Jesus are vividly present.
The sense of danger heightens. Mary is treated as Jesus is treated.
Those who love Jesus will share in his suffering. New life will not come
easily.
As we approach this Fifth Sunday in Lent, let us own with Paul our greatest
desire: "I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the
sharing of his sufferings..." In any place of your own suffering, may Christ
be with you in your place at the foot of the Cross.
With gratitude for your ministry,
Hope

UMCOR Haiti -- The Church Responds
As we mark two months since the January 12 earthquake that
devastated Haiti, please continue to be in prayer with the people in Haiti.
Your continued partnership is important as UMCOR provides shelter and provisions
for those who have lost so much. As
of March 11, 2010: - $14.5
Million has been received for UMCOR Haiti Relief
-
Please
remember that 100% of your gifts to the Haiti Emergency will support the people
in Haiti. UMCOR can do this because overhead costs are covered through the One
Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS). This year's OGHS offering is March 14.
From the Field:
UMCOR has begun implementation of a five-year work plan that
contemplates three phases of assistance to Haiti: emergency, recovery and
rehabilitation.
This week's highlights include: - Following
the earthquake in Haiti many Haitians requiring medical care were evacuated to
the US. Evacuees and those accompanying them have been granted humanitarian
parole for 12 months, which may be extended. UMCOR Refugee Ministries is
working with resettlement affiliates in Atlanta, Tampa, Philadelphia, New York
and Boston to identify and offer temporary housing for those released from
medical facilities.
Bahamas
Methodist Habitat, a US-based nonprofit organization, has been using its
mission aircraft transportation services to support relief efforts in Haiti.
Working with UMCOR Sager Brown, Bahamas
Methodist Habitat transported health kits into Haiti.
Anthony
Jones, Emergency Consultant for UMCOR Haiti is attending UN cluster meetings
and reports that farmers in the high impact quake zone have lost an estimated
$50 million in homes, seeds, tools and equipment. According to Jones, "the
reports provided by farmers indicate a clear picture of serious deterioration:
The
quality of meals has deteriorated - families have less to eat at meals or they
are eating less frequently
While
few reported losing livestock in the quake 30% have sold livestock since then 65%
rural and 50% in urban communities reported being in debt
The
majority of large importers have lost storage capacity
US Mission in Action:
UMCOR
Health hosted "Haiti Health: Moving toward a Long-Term Strategy," a web cast
meeting of long-time UMCOR partners that included, IMA World Health, Global
Health Action, Curamericas Global, and Grace Children's Hospital in
Port-au-Prince. Representatives of Methodist Hospital Systems in Houston,
Texas; Ohio Health in Columbus, Ohio; and Methodist Health Care in Memphis,
Tennessee, participated, as well as representatives of United Methodist Volunteers
in Mission. - UMCOR
Haiti has identified a need for layette kits and birthing kits to address the
basic needs of babies born in displaced persons camps in Haiti. Volunteers have
been preparing kits to send to Haiti.
