Small Business Succes Story: Whiskey River

Nightlife in Greeley, Colorado got a little brighter with the addition of Whiskey River, a live music venue owned and operated by Theresa and Rusty Boyd. With over 17 years of experience in the nightclub industry and another established Whiskey River nightclub in Grand Junction, the Boyds are not new to owning and operating a successful business. However, they still encountered new obstacles during the process of opening their new nightclub in Greeley. Theresa and Rusty began working with the Small Business Development Center to develop a business plan and obtain financing immediately following the decision to pursue business in Greeley. After more than fourteen months of rejection from local banks, the Boyds were finally able to secure $780,000 in commercial loans. The Boyds said that they were ready to give up multiple times but were continuously pushed and motivated by their counselor, Dick Pickett. "Without Dick and the SBDC, we would not be here today", Theresa insisted. Whiskey River opened its doors in October of 2009 and has since been very well-received by the Greeley community. The nightclub focuses on bringing people together with regularly scheduled live music and dancing. Theresa and Rusty have been working hard to reintroduce "date night" to the area. As quoted in the Greeley Tribune, they "are going to give people an incredible dance floor, a great band, and help them find a night to start dancing together again". The Boyd's have goals of opening additional Whiskey River locations. More immediately, however, they are focusing on getting involved with the Greeley community by providing a safe and fun nightlife environment but also by participating in community service opportunities.
