Dear JABBERS. Springtime brings so many causes for celebration, not the least of which are the religious observances that mark a very important time for many of us each year - namely Passover and Easter.
Passover begins on April 6th at sundown this year. The Jewish holiday commemorates the biblical story of Exodus, in which Moses lead the Hebrew people out of slavery in Egypt to freedom in the land of Israel. The traditional Seder dinner features foods that symbolize the bitterness of slavery and the ten plagues, which were inflicted upon the Egyptians before Pharaoh would agree to release the Hebrew slaves. The Hebrew people were instructed to mark the doorposts of their homes so that the Angel of Death carrying the last plague would pass over these homes. Today, Passover serves as a reminder of the harshness of slavery and the importance of freedom and renewal of spirit.
Easter will be celebrated on April 8th this year by Christians around the world. According to the Canonical gospels, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. His resurrection is celebrated on Easter. This is believed to have occurred between AD 26 and 36. Easter marks the end of Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. The last week of the Lent is called Holy Week, and it includes Good Friday, which commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Today, Christians all over celebrate by attending church and parties centered around rebirth and new life, including lots of chocolate bunnies and egg hunts.
