To All The Saints (and Freaks), On Super Bowl Sunday!
Dear JABBERS:
Super Bowl is such a fun time of year! One of things I love most about it is the traditions. Over the years Super Bowl Sunday has become an unofficial American holiday, with "football food," family traditions and friendly bets.
We started a tradition in our family three years ago when the New Orleans Saints played. My parents lived in New Orleans many years ago, so we decided to host a Mardi Gras parade. A group of friends gathered at our house, and we marched up and down our street in costume. The costumes were not elegant. Think Mardi Gras meets Halloween...on steroids. My father was the Grand Marshall. My neighbor was a 6-foot-tall bead clad banana. The children dragged out all kinds of paraphernalia from their costume drawers: boas, hats, tutus, tiaras, you name it. We carried an iPod and speakers and neighbors came out of every hole wondering where the loud jazz music was coming from. We carried signs and balloons and batons and noise makers and banners. We even had an 80 year-old relative riding in a red Radio Flyer wagon (red solo cup cocktail in hand). Each year since, the parade has grown and become more bizarre and more hilarious. I can't wait to see what our friends come up with this year!
I wish you all a very happy Super Bowl Sunday. And while I usually try to remain pretty neutral, I have to support my husband (born & raised in New Jersey) on this one... GO GIANTS!
