Dan Ries, Senior
Environmental Health Specialist

We love finding a perfect fit. Sometimes this perfect fit takes the shape of a pair of jeans, a friendship or even a job. For Dan Ries, his job as a Senior Environmental Health Specialist at the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health has been the perfect fit for him.

Ries started his professional career off at the University of Northern Iowa where he obtained his bachelor degree in General Science with an emphasis in Environmental Planning. "Science always fascinated me when I was younger," said Ries. "I like the logic behind science." A requirement to complete his degree was an internship. Ries completed his internship at Black Hawk County Health Department. "My internship at Black Hawk County Health Department prepared me for my career at the Health Department," Ries noted. "I learned about many facets of Environmental Health including food establishment inspections, nuisance reports, swimming pool and spa inspections and the lead program." Ries internship landed him in the right direction and right after college he started at the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health as an Environmental Health Specialist.

When Ries started at the Health Department, he was primarily responsible for inspecting food establishment such as restaurants and convenience stores and swimming pools and spas. Ries has advanced in his position to become Senior Environmental Health Specialist. Now his duties include reviewing transient non-community water supplies reports, such as restaurants and other businesses, parks, churches and other public use establishments that are not hooked up to a community water supply and oversight of the private well program where he tests wells for arsenic, bacteria and nitrates. Another unique part of Ries' job is reviewing manure management plans. "I review where farmers and farming companies plan to apply manure and the proximity their fields are to water resources, parks, residential areas and cities," he notes. Concerns of potential negative impacts to water or air quality are forwarded to the DNR.

Ries' experience at the Health Department has allowed him to become a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) and Certified Professional-Food Safety (CP-FS). This certification has benefited the Health Department in many ways including obtaining a grant through the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) to begin the department's implementation of the Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards. The Health Department will be mentored by Platte County Health Department in Missouri to conduct a self-assessment of the food program and begin to make steps toward achieving standards which will ultimately enhance the services they provide to the public and food service establishments. "This new grant opportunity will improve our new consulting approach to the food establishment inspections," he said. Ries will be coordinating this grant.

Throughout his time at the Health Department, Ries has seen many benefits. "The Environmental Health service section has expanded greatly," he notes. "We now inspect tanning salons, tattoo parlors and transient non-community water supplies." Another change the Environmental Health service section has experienced since Ries has been here is the de-regionalization of the food and the creation of the pool/spa, tanning and tattoo inspection programs. Yet, Ries says one of the greatest benefits working at the Health Department over the years has been the great coworkers. Looking toward the future of the Public Health, Ries can see Geographic Information Systems (GIS) playing a large role with environmental health concerns and wellness. "I can see GIS helping us to make connections between locations and their associated health risks," he states.

Over the years, Ries has seen many changes and advances at the Health Department; however, we're glad that it's a perfect fit for him!

Have a SAFE summer by remembering SHADE:

The Iowa Department of Public Health created this fun acronym to make sure we have a fun but safe summer. Following these tips will help to ensure your summer is made in the "SHADE:"

*S - Sunscreen. Put on sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher and reapply throughout the day, especially if swimming or sweating.

*H - Heat safety. Drink lots of water and other non-alcoholic, sugar-free fluids; wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing when outdoors, especially when active; and when temperatures soar, stay in the shade or air conditioning as much as possible.

*A - Animal contact. Remember to wash your hands after touching animals at places like petting zoos or county fairs. Avoid stray and wild animals; they may carry diseases like rabies.

*D - DEET. To prevent being bitten by ticks and mosquitoes that can carry diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease, use insect repellent with DEET (follow the label directions when using, especially on children).

*E - Eating outdoors. Grill all meats until thoroughly cooked and always keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot.

Happy June!

This month is off to a beautiful start. Take advantage of healthy, fresh produce this summer by attending one of the three farmer's markets in our county:

  • North Iowa Farmer's Market (K-Mart parking lot - Tuesdays and Fridays 3:00-6:00 PM Hwy 122 Mason City)
  • Mason City Market (Central Park, Mason City - Thursdays 4:30-7:30 PM and Saturdays 8:00 AM-12:00 PM)
  • Clear Lake Farmer's Market (City Hall parking lot -Saturdays 9:00-11:00 AM Clear Lake)

We have had over 50 cases of Pertussis in the county.

Pertussis is highly contagious and can be serious, even deadly for infants. Adolescents and adults who have not received a pertussis-containing vaccination since childhood are no longer immune to the illness; leaving them at risk to spread the disease to young children if they become ill with pertussis. The Health Department is encouraging individuals who have a persistent cough to contact their medical provider to be checked for Pertussis. The cough may have the following symptoms:

  • Cause coughing 'fits,' making it difficult to breathe.
  • Be more severe at night interfering with sleep.
  • Cause vomiting.
  • End with a high-pitched 'whoop' sound when breathing in after a series of coughs (this is most common among young children).

Pertussis  can be prevented with a vaccine. Individuals in need of the pertussis (Tdap) vaccine should contact their medical provider or their local health department. The Cerro Gordo County Public Health Department's Immunization Clinic offers the Tdap vaccine. The Immunization Clinic is open Monday - Friday from 10:00 AM - noon and 12:30 - 4:00 PM.

The Health Department Receives Komen Grant!

The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is a recipient of Komen Iowa grant funding for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Komen Iowa funds programs that improve access to breast health services for women, enhance breast health education and awareness and improve areas within the continuum of breast cancer care. The Cerro Gordo County Komen grant will provide assistance to women in a 15-county region who do not have health insurance or who are under-insured, women will receive mammograms and breast diagnostic services. The department currently contracts with the Iowa Department of Public Health Care for Yourself program to assist women in Cerro Gordo County with payment for mammograms and pap smears. The Care for Yourself program covers a limited number of women per year from July 1-April 1 and partially pays for breast biopsies. The Cerro Gordo County Komen grant will allow the health department to expand the breast screening services in the Care for Yourself program to provide the service year-around and fully cover the expenses from biopsies. The grant will allow 75 more women in need receive screening and diagnostic services.
