Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
About 12% of women born today will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Early detection of cancer saves lives. Did you know at Public Health, we have a program that offers free breast screenings, mammograms, pelvic screenings and Pap tests for eligible women? Visit our web site to learn how you can access this service!
The Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Iowa Department of Public Health help fund our program to provide these services so ALL WOMEN are served.
We are also very excited to offer "Fight Like a Girl" merchandise. Proceeds from this fundraising effort will help supplement breast health services women can't afford. To help out, go to their website, click on support a fundraiser and choose Cerro Gordo County Women's Health Fund.
Are you looking for a fun 5k to run? Sign up for the Des Moines Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to be a part of an amazing experience! It's October 23rd in Des Moines. Click here for their site. |

MOLD
Environmental health staff get calls about mold regularly. People are concerned about "toxic" or "black" mold. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind about mold:
most mold is black or green
there are thousands of types of mold & only a handful of them are toxic
mold affects people in different ways
mold can affect people with allergies or asthma more
mold is a plant, it needs food and water to grow
there are no state or federal laws to regulate how to handle mold
What can you do?
Control moisture & humidity in your home. Remove the surfaces mold grows on and replace with new. Always protect yourself while dealing with mold.

Greetings!
Fall is here and with it comes many sporting events and gatherings. At Public Health, Fall is the season of flu clinics. To provide better access for you, we have extended our hours at Mohawk Square, have public clinics set throughout the county, and will work with your businesses to provide vaccines onsite. It is very important to get a flu vaccine to protect yourself and the ones you love.
October is breast cancer awareness month and throughout this month, we are offering many services to raise awareness and ensure women take care of themselves. We offer free mammograms to eligible women, staff will provide education to groups who request it, and we are now selling Fight Like a Girl merchandise to help women pay for breast health services they can't afford. See the article to the left to read more.
We are here to help! Please contact us at webmaster@cghealth.com or at the numbers listed above with any questions you may have about our services! Kara Vogelson Public Information Officer (Acting) |

Flu Clinics
Public Health will have influenza vaccine ready for the public beginning on October 4th.
The flu vaccine is updated every year to combat the flu viruses that research indicates are most likely to cause illness during the upcoming season. The 2010-2011 vaccine will protect against the 2009 H1N1 virus that caused so much illness last season, and two other influenza viruses (an H3N2 virus and an influenza B virus).

Wellness Corner
Have a SAFE & HEALTHY HALLOWEEN
Trick-or-Treating provides a great opportunity for families to fit in some extra physical activity time together. Encourage your child (and yourself) to walk the trick-or-treating path rather than driving from block to block. When you and your child arrive back home, go through the goody bag together and remove unsafe items or foods. This moment is also a great time to review good nutritional and dental hygiene habits.
Remember, everything (even candy) in MODERATION!
Health and Halloween Tips:
S- Short, soft, flexible costume accessories A- Adult supervised trick-or-treating
F- Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags E- Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering
