Protect Your Family from Recreational Water Illnesses
(RWIs)

Swimming is a fun, active and healthy way to spend leisure time.

However, in the past two decades the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports seeing an increase in the number of Recreational Water Illness (RWI) outbreaks associated with swimming pools, water parks, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, and oceans.

RWIs are illnesses that are spread by swallowing, breathing, or having contact with contaminated water from swimming pools, spas, lakes, rivers, or oceans.

RWIs can cause a wide variety of symptoms, including gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurological and wound infections.

Protecting your family is easy by following a few simple suggestions.

Does this look familiar?
Lead paint chipping porch Chipping paint is common in many homes, especially older homes.

If you live in a house that was built before 1978, you may have lead paint in your home. Your children or grandchildren could be lead-poisoned. Lead poisoning harms children.

Lead poisoning is 100% preventable!

Before we knew how harmful it could be, lead was used in many products, including paint. Lead does not break down naturally and can remain a problem until it is removed. You may have lead in the dust, paint, or soil in and around your home, or in your drinking water or food.

The only way to know if a child is lead-poisoned is to have a blood test. It's a simple finger poke. State law requires that all children have a lead test prior to entering kindergarten.

Free testing is available. For details, visit our web site today!

Every child deserves to be lead-free!
Parents: you can be a hero!
Tobacco partnership logoTobacco is the #1 preventable cause of death in the United States.

You've heard the statistics and you've seen the commercials on TV. Many adults are dying of smoking-related illnesses as their children sit by and watch.

What we want you to know is that as parents, you have the power to help your children avoid tobacco products before they get hooked. If your children are already using tobacco products, you have the power to help them quit.

Read our Letter to Parents for details on how you can help your child avoid tobacco - or quit!
HIV Testing Day is June 27: know your status

There are many reasons you should know your HIV status.

Even though there is no cure for HIV, early medical treatment can lead to a longer and healthier life.

Finding out you have HIV does not mean you are going to get sick and die. There are new drugs available that can help you stay healthy and decrease the amount of HIV virus in your body. The longer a person has HIV and goes without treatment, the less likely medications will work effectively to fight the virus.

National HIV Testing Day is June 27. Know your status. Get tested.

The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health provides confidential

HIV testing.
