Lower Zambezi opens

April and May are the first months of the safari season in Zambia's Lower Zambezi.   From now until November it is one of the most exciting places for seeing large elephant herds, which come down to the river to drink, swim and cavort.  You can enjoy boating and canoeing on the river as well as open vehicle drives and walking safaris from superb little lodges like Chiawa Camp. Old Mondoro and Sausage Tree.  You can be as active as you like, or can simply spend a morning on your verandah watching kingfishers darting into the Zambezi.   Ross will plan your itinerary.

Perfect Family holiday

If you're thinking of taking the children on a family holiday of a lifetime this August what could be better than waking at Tortilis camp in Amboseli to see Mount Kilimanjaro rising before you through the mists. Then have your own little luxury camp deep in the Masai Mara where the migration of 2 million wildebeest and zebra is at its peak and hundreds of lion, leopard and crocodiles add to the mayhem.   Africa Exclusive uses small remote camps and lodges on private reserves to get you into the wilds and away from the crowds. Round it off with a few days on exotic Lamu island or Zanzibar. Contact Paul to arrange your family holiday of a lifetime.

A week of the 'wow' factor

With magnificent sand dunes, great granite mountains and a desolate Atlantic coastline, Namibia has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world and the cooler winter months of June to September are the perfect time to visit. Explore the Skeleton Coast where the shoreline is dominated by bleached whale bones, shipwrecks and seal colonies before moving inland, dunes give way to great clay castles, home to rare desert-adapted wildlife. A wonderful addition is the desert oasis of Serra Cafema on the banks of the Kunene River. Here a morning with the semi-nomadic Himba tribe, a sunset river cruise or a walk to the rolling waterfalls, where with the mountains of neighbouring Angola are almost within touching distance, provide the perfect antidote to the rush of modern life. Contact Laura for more details about the world's most spectacular deserts.

Desert Island delights

Look out of the window as you fly down the coast of Mozambique and you'll see a string of tiny tropical islands surrounded by shallow azure waters and spectacular coral gardens.  They look like sandy jewels casually strewn across the blue ocean by some giant hand.  Islands like Vamizi, Benguerra and Azura make you feel like a 21st century Robinson Crusoe.  These islands are far smaller and infinitely quieter and more private than the Maldives.  The snorkelling, diving and watersports are superb with pristine brilliantly coloured coral reefs teeming with iridescent fish.  You can reach these remote islands from Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam so they combine well with a safari in Botswana, Southern Africa or somewhere like Sand Rivers lodge in the Selous.  If you are feeling more intrepid, take your safari in Mozambique's recently reopened Gorongossa National Park where you can enjoy pioneering walking safaris in spectacular scenery.  Contact Laura now to plan your escape to these unique islands.

Life and death in the Okavango

The waters are already rising in the Okavango delta, the miraculous annual "flood" having come several weeks early this year.  If you're lucky enough to go in the next few months look forward to crisp mornings with champagne air and long sunny days on safari under immense Okavango skies.  We loved our time at Little Kwara Camp in late April with its views across the watery floodplains and its charming confident Botswana staff.  Herds of tsessebe, kudu, reedbuck shimmering in the grass, thousands of impala everywhere.  Breeding herds of elephant, playful adolescent bulls and lazy lions which couldn't care less.  But we also witnessed the most harrowing sights and sounds in our twenty years on safari, as a pack of five wild dog cornered and killed a heavily pregnant alpha female from a rival pack in a shallow lagoon right in front of us.  A reminder that behind those deceptively idyllic scenes there is a fierce competitiveness to life and death in the bush.  We have just heard that specially discounted rates will apply at Kwando Safaris Botswana camps through to 20 July as space has been released that was being held for the World Cup.  Contact John and book your dream safari to Botswana.

Camp Jabulani - South Africa

Camp Jabulani was founded by the renowned wildlife visionary, Lente Roode who is also the co-founder of the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. The camp has altruistic beginnings, when an orphaned baby elephant was found stuck in the mud of a silt dam.  He was rescued and given the name Jabulani which means "happiness" in Zulu.
