Greetings from Leigh Bortins
|
State Managers are working over-time with me this month and next to plan and prepare for Classical Conversations' signature events: the free 3-day Parent Practicums which will be held all over the country this spring and summer.
This is really the heart and soul of Classical Conversations: to reach moms and dads and encourage them to educate their children from home and do it well using the model of classical education, and to inspire them to raise up children who will be great leaders for our country.
This summer's practicums will focus on going Beyond a Book in educating our children and seeing them as souls to be nurtured for the glory of God instead of pragmatic products to be measured by man.
In educating our children, it is important to understand that knowledge, understanding, and wisdom are not apprehended by a sacred, yet ever-altering, set of curriculum books that the state sets forth. In true education, an education that gives a student wings to fly and serve their life purpose, we have to learn to think beyond a book.
CiRCE Institute founder, Andrew Kern, will visit in select cities via a multi-media presentation to share his heart for education that reclaims the whole student, challenging educators everywhere to adjust their thinking.
Join us and other classical, home-educating parents in a free 3-day practicum near you...and let's go beyond a book together!

CC 101: Becoming Memory Masters
|
The foundation of a Classical education is learning how to memorize facts, and it turns out, the more you memorize, the easier it becomes to memorize. The brain is like a muscle in this way: the more you use it, the more it is able to do! That's why CC encourages students to become Memory Masters in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades - at least!
So, how can parents help their students become memory masters? We asked a few veterans and this is their advice: 1) "They need to recite every fact every day, but it doesn't have to be all at once. Break it up by doing the Bible passage right after breakfast, the math right after math lessons, Latin at lunch, and history before reading time." 2) "Allow your student to stand, lie down, wiggle, do jumping jacks or even 'swim' across the kitchen floor while they recite. Sometimes sitting still takes more concentration than being free to wiggle." 3) "Post tricky facts around the house. Make a poster or print out the fact and put it in a page protector and tape it to the wall or the back door or the refrigerator so that it gets seen throughout the day. I will make my house look beautiful after the kids leave for college. Right now, I don't worry about it a bit!" 4) "Cover the words on the front of the time line cards with Post-it Notes so your students can see only the picture. Let them look at the pictures as often as they need to. Eventually they'll be able to say them without even peeking." 5) "The memory flashcards we ordered from CC make it so easy to drill the kids. I keep them in my purse so if we have a wait in the dentist's office or somewhere, I can go through a subject and not waste any time! They also make it easy for my husband to quiz the kids at night and give me a little break." 6) "Geography needs it's own time everyday. You have to make time to get out the map and a dry erase marker. I call out each item and watch while she traces or dots each item. Once a week, she draws it all on her own." 7) "Tape up the sections of the Bible passage in a route through your house. Have them go to each location to recite that passage. Use furniture as landmarks. Then, when reciting they can mentally "walk" through the house using "landmarks" as cues to what comes next." 8) "We invite some CC friends over and make it a game. Ask kids a memory question one at a time. If they answer correctly, they get a point. Keep going until all the work is covered."
9) "I sent my list of memory work to my mom because my daughter talks to her almost everyday (they live 600 miles away). Reviewing memory work is part of their routine. She wants to impress Grandma, so she works harder than she might for me." 10) "Read (or re-read) the book How to Develop a Brilliant Memory by Dominic O'Brien. This is a book Leigh recommended to me, and it has really given me some good ideas and a good understanding of what we're doing." Postcards from CC Communities

A Foundations student in Garner, NC told the story of Aztec pyramids and human sacrifices using a graham cracker pyramid and Teddy Graham cookies. She explained that no Teddy Grahams were harmed in the making of this presentation (except those that were eaten by the class afterward).

We are in Classical Conversations in Modesto, California. After making a big move across country last year I felt lost and without direction in many parts of my life, especially homeschooling my four children.
Classical Conversations has brought a strong 'spine' to our academics and has not only given me the education I should have gotten, but is giving my children the foundation they need.
As we were reading the history cards for week 18, which are the years of 1846-1869, my six year old says "That is around the time of Queen Victoria and the Age of Imperialism, Mom (1877)." This shocked me as well as impressed me that his little six-year-old mind is trying to make sense of history!
Another "aha!" moment was with the same child. I gave him a drill sheet of addition problems to complete. He looks at it and says,"That's a lot of problems, Mom. How many are there?"
I responded to him to go ahead and count them. Which he begins to count by 4's: "4,8,12,16, 20. Oh, Mom, there are 20 here. That shouldn't take me too long." As he walked away I thought, perhaps I should just skip addition and go straight to multiplication.:-)
Thanks for giving our homeschool some great tracks to run on! ____________________________________________________________

Blessings! This is a group photo of our Garden Oaks Campus in Houston, Texas.
I am very blessed to have such a wonderful bunch of families that love the Lord and enjoy learning.
May the Lord bless you, Karen Lindsey, Houston, TX.

Com-mu-ni-ty n. a group of people forming a smaller social unit within a larger one and sharing common interests, work, identity, location, etc.
After 10 years of being a part of Classical Conversations, and eight years of directing a Foundations Program, this word has become very precious to me. Community is what envelops my family and makes each day we meet for class a special joy...Sharing prayer requests with our community, and knowing that they will pray with and for us...Celebrating the birth of a new baby, or the passing of a relative into their heavenly reward...Reading a great book and discussing it with fellow students or fellow mom. These are just a few examples of what binds our community in Clemmons together. I am blessed beyond belief to be surrounded by godly women who love their children well, teach them well, and love each other well. Thank you, dear God, for the Clemmons Classical Conversations Community.
Jennifer Jordan, Foundations & Essentials Director, Clemmons, NC ____________________________________________________________
During Sunday School at our church a few months ago, the teacher was having a discussion with the preschool class about how God makes things grow, and how certain things need to have special qualities to make them grow. Match-box cars don't grow and Polly Pockets don't grow, and so on. During this discussion, our three-year-old stood up in the middle of class (politely, I am assuming!) and said, "The five kingdoms of living things are: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Monera." He was already putting what he had memorized into context! The Sunday School teacher came to me with a smile on her face, told me the story, and said, "Well, there's a point for CC!" I just smiled and said, "We love Classical Conversations!"
Yours in Christ,

| CC Online Book Club Announces Next Book! |
March Reading: Carry On, Mr. Bowditch
This book is on the student reading list in Challenge A, but parents will be inspired on a whole different level. Carry On, Mr. Bowditch lays out a perfect model for classical, Christian homeschooling! Experience how Nat Bowditch learned Latin using the Gospel of John in English and in Latin, how he taught himself math on a slate with a piece of chalk, how he collected notes and wrote books from them, and most exciting, how he learned to teach sailors math on the deck of a ship at night! This book reads like an adventure novel, but you will cherish the tidbits of wisdom you'll glean from it as an educator and parent!
Check it out from the library, or, if you want to purchase it, you can order it from the CC Bookstore. Online discussion will begin in April. Join us online anytime.
It's not necessary to be a member of C3 to participate. The discussion forum will be placed on the public (free) portion of C3. Click here to visit C3. Book Club Discussion Forum
CC Parents: consider hosting a live book club for your CC Community! Encourage parents in your group to read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch and host a book club discussion at your home one evening in February. Moms (and dads, too!) can really use an evening out...a time to encourage one another and discuss great literature!
CC Moms' night out: dessert and a good book discussion!
