GREETINGS
From Susan Davis

Susan Davis

I must admit that I am currently bewildered by business forecasts.  I keep hearing that the economy is growing, but very slowly.  Retail sales are low, housing is just beginning to rebound a bit.  AND yet, when I talk to small business owners, most are very pleased with the way they have "weathered the storm" of the past several years.

Some of their comments include:

  1. Compared to this month last year, we are XX% ahead.
  2. We have expanded our service offerings and hiring additional employees.
  3. Our sales have continued to increase over the past three years.
  4. 2011 was my best year in the past ten.
  5. We bought out a competitor in 2011, so our employee numbers are up.

I do understand that this is not the case for all of our businesses, and some of them are struggling.  But all in all, it appears that small business has remained very stable throughout these tumultuous times.  Small business owners are very flexible and can adapt quickly to tough times.

Even though the economic forecast is bleak, small business owners remain positive about their products and services.  Stop in and see them!

Lt. Governor Skillman

This is the sixth year the Lt. Governor has hosted the Advancing Hoosier Women in Business Seminars. The seminars target business women and provide technical assistance, motivation and networking opportunities.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT
The Recycle Guy Roll Off Dumpsters
Suzy & Brook
Hoosier Heartland SBDC Business Advisor Monty Henderson first met with The Recycle Guy owners, Suzy & Brook Edwards, on February 14, 2011.  The clients needed a loan to attain more equipment to expand their existing business in a recession wracked economy. The Recycle Guy's niche is the delivery of new roofing shingles in a patented container that is built to also haul off the old shingles to be recycled for their asphalt content.  The trucks and containers are sized ideally to leave a small footprint at a residential work site.  The business saves roofing contractors valuable time and space.
The advisor logged 36 hours on the funding project.  The primary focus was to establish a solid set of cash flow projections that accurately portrayed the financial potential of the business due to the proposed expansion.  The resulting business plan was utilized to secure a SBA guaranteed loan in spring 2012.
Other support that the advisor provided was to aid in the development of a number of potential funding options that would assist short term business cash flow, stability, and growth.  The Recycle Guy's sales doubled in the first quarter of 2012 as compared to the same period in 2011.  The company also received the Woman & Minority Owned Business Certification with assistance from the HHSBDC.

Monty Henderson credits the client's persistence in their endeavor to expand their business.  "The Edward's ran into a lot of road blocks that may have stopped a lot of others in their tracks, but they kept bouncing back with more resolve each time and their persistence has paid off."

It's All About the Customer!

Like many others, I got my first credit card as a college student.  It was a gas company card and it had a practical use and it allowed me to establish myself as credit worthy.  When I was about to graduate college, I saw an invitation form to apply for a top name brand green - colored credit card (hereafter called the "A Card").  The offer was for college graduates, and I was flattered that they accepted me as a new member.
