Community Connection Yellow Pages representative Steve Lubinski, center, recently met with Melrose Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Joan Ford Mongeau and President Kevin DeVinney to deliver the 2010 edition of the Melrose Community Connection Yellow Pages telephone directory. The 2010 directory is ready to be mailed to residents and businesses throughout the city, with delivery expected during the first full week of April.

In addition to the Community Connections Yellow Pages directory, which has full-color community pages, JFL Marketing has enhanced the online editions of each of its 22 telephone directories, including Melrose. The www.communityconnection.com website is more user-friendly with users able to find Yellow Pages advertisers by category, or by name. The site also enables users to access the directories' white pages, user pages, and street directories, along with advertiser coupons, company profiles, videos, links to advertiser websites and emails, and interactive maps.

Spotlight On A New Chamber Member:
Melrose Arts and Cultural Association

By Joan Ford Mongeau

Melrose is gaining a reputation as a city friendly to the arts.  From the performing to the visual, we are fortunate in this city to be surrounded by creative energy.  A new Chamber member, the Melrose Arts and Cultural Association (MACA) is dedicated to encouraging the arts in Melrose.  In fact, the mission statement of MACA states that it "unites artists, arts organizations, patrons and other enthusiasts of culture to encourage, present and sustain artistic and cultural activities in Melrose, Massachusetts for the benefit of its citizens."

There are many ways in which MACA fulfills its mission, and I recently had a conversation with local painter and MACA steering committee member, Debra Corbett, about the different ways the arts are being promoted in Melrose. One program, The Window Art Walk, is the perfect example of how the business and artistic community work together.  Works of art are brought right to Main Street, where businesses volunteer window space for local artists to display their work for all to see.  The Artists Demonstration series is yet another program supported by MACA where professionals from near and surrounding towns demonstrate their craft to Melrose residents.

The Melrose Arts Festival is one of the most visible examples of MACA's work.  The 2010 weekend long festival will be held at Memorial Hall starting on Friday, April 16th and ending on Sunday, April 18th.  The money raised at the Festival funds MACA's other projects including Window Art Walk and the Artists Demonstration series.  The Festival traditionally features an always amazing display of local art, good food and music. To add to the excitement, this year MACA is trying something new-an online raffle.  Works by renowned local and regional artists Tom Sutherland, Nancy Roll, Ellen Rolli, Tom Savage, Lisa Tiemann, and Will Kirkpatrick will be included in a unique on-line raffle.  Raffle tickets are $20 each, and there is a limit of 75 tickets per item.  Deb Corbett tells us that "the on line raffle gives people the opportunity to not only take a chance to win a high quality piece of art but also the opportunity to support our organization.  This raffle will replace the silent auction that used to be a feature of the Preview Party Open."

All raffle items are on display at Miter Biter, 479 Main Street, through April 16th.  Click on this link and choose which piece or pieces you like, and buy your ticket: http://www.melrosearts.com/raffle.html.  Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at the festival.

The arts are alive and well in Melrose, thanks to the efforts of the Melrose Arts and Cultural Association.  For more information about MACA, contact Debra Corbett at debracorbett@gmail.com.

A Message from the Melrose Chamber of Commerce Executive Director

2010 is a year of "firsts" for the Melrose Chamber of Commerce.  For example, this is the first newsletter with a corporate sponsor, JFL Marketing, publisher of the Community Connection Yellow Pages.  Sponsorship of our newsletter puts your business in front of over 300 newsletter recipients.

2010 is also the first year of the Melrose Gives Back festival.  Members of the Melrose Chamber of Commerce Merchants Group have designated May 1st as a day to both promote shopping locally and, in turn, these retailers will donate 10% of their proceeds to the Melrose Public Schools PTOs.  It is their hope that this will become a regular event, with proceeds going to various Melrose charities.  For more information, please visit the Chamber web site at www.melrosechamber.org.

Other "firsts" are in the works, such as offering you the ability to pay your membership dues or save a space at a networking event on line!  Watch for more to come at
the Melrose Chamber of Commerce.

Not only are we working on  "firsts" but we are also offering you a chance to particpate in our time honored traditions.  One tradition we are pleased to present once again is our  Annual Comedy Night at Prince Pizza. On Thursday, April 29th at 6:30 pm treat yourself and your friends to an evening of laughter and great pizza.  To reserve a spot, contact me at joan@melrosechamber.org. I hope to see you soon!
