Voices from Around the World-Asia

Christophe Bongars, ISSP Board Member

Christophe Bongars

As a lead-up to our conference, we wanted to take the pulse of sustainability in different regions of the world.

  • What are the biggest challenges?
  • What are their best practices that other regions can implement?

We are experimenting this month with a video format for our journal article. This interview is with Chris Bongars, an ISSP board member based in Hong Kong. Chris was born in France but now works in a number of countries in Asia. Hear what he has to say about the status of sustainability in this region.

The ISSP Fall Conference
September 21-23, Portland, OR
Portland skyline mountain

We've designed an event to keep you networked, updated and inspired!  Based on member input, we've booked world class speakers, scheduled lots of networking time, arranged a member expo where members can share their products and services, and included special generative sessions in which you will participate in the shaping of our profession.

Here's a sampling:

  • Randy Olson, author of Don't Be Such a Scientist, is a keynote speaker, "A Superhuman Tale of Science Communication".
  • Representatives from GRI, SAI and ULE to talk about the latest tools and trends in reporting and assessing.
  • Presenters from Nike, Mattel, and SAP telling the stories of their internal implementations.
  • and more...

In addition to the two-day conference you can also participate in one of two pre-conference events:

  • Workshop: Sustainability Planning taught by Marsha Willard (fulfill an ISSP certificate requirement in this one-day, face-to-face format)
  • Portland Sustainability Site Tour to some of the city's most innovative organizations in both the public and private sector.

To keep the conversations intimate, registration in these events is limited.  We're offering ISSP members first shots at the seats, so don't delay!  Click here to register or get more information

Climate Change Toolkit - Upstream Materials Management Focus

This month we are doing something a little different.  This is a treasure hunt.  We've posted a new climate change tool on the ISSP site that looks at the calculation of climate change impacts in a different way.  It takes a hard look at the embedded energy in stuff:  the compounded climate impacts of extracting resources, processing materials, manufacturing and transportation.

In the words of the toolkit creators, West Coast Climate and Materials Management Forum:

"This new toolkit provides resources to integrate material conservation into your community's GHG inventory and climate action planning

The Toolkit includes:

New approaches to GHG inventories that quantifies impacts from materials

Model Climate Action Plans that include materials conservation practices

Innovative policies that can reduce material consumption and increase recycling and composting

Example ordinances, standards, and policies to drive GHG reductions from material management"

Intrigued?  Go to the ISSP website and see if you can find it.  There are a couple ways to look.  After you log in:

>  Click on the Resources section in the left column

>  Then Click on Resource Library Search.

>  Type in a couple key words you think might work and look for the toolkit link.

--OR--

>  Click on Recent Posts in the right column.

>  Scan through the list or do a search in the center section above the Recent Post

After you have checked out the tool kit, post your own comment on it.  Just click on "Add new comment" below the post or choose "Subscribe to this post".

 BOOK REVIEWS

Jarvis, Jeff (2009) What Would Google Do? Harper Collins, NY, NY.

Cover

This book is not about Google per se but rather about the new business rules of engagement in this age of Twitter, Facebook and of course Google, where your main service may be free and you get income through a side-door, where you collaborate with your customers openly rather than trying to sweep problems under the rug, where transparency is assumed and sometimes forced upon a company. This new world is disrupting many businesses: eliminating middlemen and enabling buyers to compare prices. Take one false step and it's quickly tweeted around the world. More....

CoverRose, Chris (2010) How to Win Campaigns: Communications for Change, Second Edition. London, UK: Earthscan

It can be instructive to view your work through a different lens. This book is about setting up and managing campaigns, and most of the examples deal with environmental problems, so the topic is very relevant to sustainability professionals. While you may not be working for an NGO that is planning a major campaign, the lessons in this book are still quite useful. Campaigns are defined as a conversation with society, with the goal of persuading large numbers of people to act with urgency, without having to make friends first. More...
