Confused about Social Sustainability? What it means for organizations in developed countries
by Darcy Hitchcock and Marsha WIllard
| Courtesy FreeDigitalPhoto savit keawtavee |
Many people in developed countries struggle to understand what social sustainability has to do with them. They assume we've legislated out of existence many of the problems associated with social injustice: slavery, child labor, racial discrimination, unsafe workplaces, etc. This year, we intend to have several issues related to social sustainability because it often gets less attention. This article, the first in a series, presents a way of making sense of social sustainability in the developed world.

ISSP CONFERENCE | CALL for PRESENTERS Portland, OR ~ Sept. 21-23, 2011
|
The fall 2011 ISSP conference is being designed to be a rich learning experience for sustainability professionals of all levels. We are striving to make the event as engaging and collaborative as possible. This will be a conference by and for ISSP members. To that end we are soliciting session presenters for two unique session types.
Living case study
One of the exciting threads we are planning is a series of "living case studies." These will be opportunities for participants to roll up their sleeves, work together on real world problems, share ideas and walk away with new tools and strategies. To support this effort we are soliciting ISSP members for case studies for use in these sessions. These should be real situations from real organizations. The case studies should provide background information to set the context and then describe a conundrum that needs solving. This could be your opportunity to get free advice from respected peers or, if your situation gets resolved before the conference, have your solution strategy validated. The point is to expose members to common dilemmas, barriers, problems and surprises to help us all become better prepared to fulfill our mission as professionals.
We invite you to complete a case study application using the outline below as a template. If your case study is chosen for inclusion in the program, you will receive a free admission to both days of the conference and the chance to present your situation during the living case study session. In order to qualify for consideration you must provide the information requested in the form and attest that you have permission or authority to share this information in this context. Submissions are due by March 31, 2011.
Your submission should follow this outline:
- Your name
- Your organization
- Your contact info (email, phone number, address)
- The name of the case organization
- A short description of the organization - what it does, where it is, size, etc
- Background on the situation (in less than 2000 words)
- A description of the "problem" to be resolved
- Action taken to date and the results (if any)
- Declaration of authority (include a signed statement indicating that you have the right or permission to share this information in a public forum and that ISSP is in no way liable for your presentation)
Submit your applications for either or both sessions as a word document attachment in an email to
Marsha Willard.

One of the main benefits of ISSP membership is access to our online database of resources. This section of the newsletter is a new feature where we intend to point you toward great postings and also solicit your submissions. This database is only as good as we all make it! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SUSTAINABILITY BOOK? What is the best book you've read about sustainability in the last year or two? Please follow this procedure to share this with other members: Log in and search for the book title (in the "Search the ISSP Resource Library" field near the top of the screen). - If there is already a review, click on Add New Comment near the bottom of the screen. In the subject line, indicate the number of stars (max 5 stars) you would give the book and then add your comments.
- If the book is not already in our database, create a book review. (Click on Create Content in the right column. Choose Resource. Fill out the form and choose Book Review as the Resource Type. Put in appropriate keywords as Tags and click Save.
Dorothy Atwood is our Resources Program Manager so contact her if you have ideas of things you want other members to post or ideas of ways we can use this feature to pull together information. |

Pink, Daniel (2009)
Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us.
London, England: Riverhead Books.
The best part about this book: The message. "When it comes to motivation, there's a gap between what science knows and business does. Our current business operating system-which is built around external, carrot-and-stick motivators-doesn't work and often does harm. We need an upgrade. And the science shows the way."

Toolbox for Sustainable City Living
This is a do-it-yourself guide for eco-lifestyles. It covers everything from mushroom cultivation to rainwater collection, home-made composting toilets and bioremediation. It's a useful guide for people who want to go beyond recycling. This is not useful for organizations.
