Kim Hedberg is First to Complete the Sustainability Professional Certificate!

We are pleased to announce that Kim Hedberg, an ISSP member, is the first professional to complete all requirements for the Sustainability Professional Certificate (SPC). She completed the program in ten months while working three-quarter time as a consultant.

Kim, owner of Balanced Solutions, LLC, started her business consulting firm in 1997 while still in business school. Back then, sustainability wasn't exactly top of mind in the business world, but Kim, influenced after reading The Ecology of Commerce, worked to insert sustainability ideas into her strategic planning for her clients.

She became an ISSP member last January, attracted by the association of professionals, and found the classes of interest.
She had looked at a couple other training programs, but didn't find any that were as easy to access or seemed as comprehensive. Her local university now offers a certificate, but she felt it was too thin, and had no real management classes on the list. What she found most useful for her own situation were the techniques offered for consulting. All the instructors created a track for consultants within their classes.

After the third or fourth class, she decided to go ahead and get the certificate because "it would give me more credibility with businesses I wanted to work with on sustainability, as well as just giving me additional knowledge to help them. "

She found that all of the core courses and electives "had bits and pieces of info that really rounded out my understanding of sustainability and how applicable that info would be in the field. All were useful, especially the tools (received by the instructors). I think I got very applicable tools that were useful right away."

She also reports that she got a lot out of working in groups within the classes, because "working on a project with others helps you learn a lot. The different backgrounds make the projects even better."

Her advice to incoming students:  "The order of the classes doesn't matter so much. I would suggest the Community Development course and AtKisson course be done later, since they are more intensive and requires more knowledge before starting. "

Final Words:  "The ISSP certificate program is certainly more comprehensive than anything out there besides a business degree."
