Greetings!

As we close out 2009, the ISSP management team and board would like to thank our members for their continued support and contributions to ISSP. We end our second year with some real indicators of growth.

In 2009 we:
  • Doubled our membership
  • Added a Marketing Director to the team and implemented a marketing campaign to continue that growth
  • Received official designation as a 501c3 non-profit organization
  • Implemented a quality professional certificate program
  • Had roughly 97 students complete 253 courses
  • Released our second report: Cool Trends 2
  • Conducted our first survey on core competencies for the profession
  • Began holding member meetings (every other month)
  • Upgraded our newsletter format and system
  • Upgraded our course registration system
We're looking forward to the New Year and achieving even greater success in 2010. We can't do this without our member's continued support. See below in the "What's New at ISSP" article for more information on our plans for the coming year.

sincerely,

Peace Corp(oration): IBM's Deep Dive Into Social Responsibility
by Janet Brumbaugh
ibmlogoISSP Guest Writer

Sustainability 1.0 was about mitigating risks: getting ahead of regulations and avoiding PR debacles. Sustainability 2.0 involves the recognition that this work improves competitiveness. So what's next? ISSP went in search of tangible examples of Sustainability 3.0 where corporations realize that there are huge problems in the world that they are well positioned to solve. This interview with Kevin Thompson is one place our search took us. Kevin created IBM's Corporate Service Corps, an internal Peace Corps of sorts. Read more.
Sustainability 101
with Darcy Hitchcock

The class meets online on January 5, 12, 19, 26
12:00 PM Pacific time

Sustainability101Sustainability 101 covers the fundamental concepts related to sustainability and sustainable development: its source, foundational principles and major practices/
frameworks.  We will approach this topic using methods for different learning styles: reading both non-fiction and fiction, mind mapping, research, webinars and discussion forums. Don't just understand the problems; begin to see how the solutions can weave together to create a better life for us all. • Identify the most pressing sustainability trends, worldwide and in your own region/industry
  • Demonstrate proficiency in systems thinking
  • Describe different sustainability practices/terms/frameworks in common use and explain how they interrelate
  • Apply common strategies in both public and private sector situations

AASHE Offers Discount on New STARS 1.0 Program for Colleges and Universities

AASHELogoAASHE's new Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) is a voluntary, self-reporting framework for gauging relative progress toward sustainability for colleges and universities. It awards points for engaging in sustainability practices in three major categories: education and research; operations; and planning, and administration and engagement. STARS provides a standard, comprehensive way to compare the sustainability performance of higher education institutions, and to measure a single institution's progress over time. Institutions are now able to review the STARS 1.0 Early Release Technical Manual. This document outlines in detail the three STARS categories and the associated sub-categories.

A key feature of STARS is that all indicators are transparent, so it is clear how an institution earns a rating. In addition, STARS encompasses the triple bottom line of sustainability including not only environmental indicators, but social and economic as well. Finally, a STARS rating is good for three years before it expires, which encourages institutions to pursue a path of continuous improvement toward sustainability.

Register today to become a STARS Charter Participant!  All institutions that register on or before December 31, 2009, will pay a discounted fee. Also, Save the Date for Tuesday, January 19th at 12pm Eastern for an AASHE webinar launching STARS 1.0. Speakers will include Paul Rowland, AASHE's new Executive Director, Dave Newport from the University of Colorado at Boulder and more! Contact stars@aashe.org for further information.
