Greetings!
Recently, while looking for a new home I dealt with a group of professionals I ordinarily do not come into contact with every day. While most of the encounters were pleasant, several did not go so well. This made me think about responsibility and, how the lack thereof affects other peoples' lives negatively.
I recalled that one of my very first workshops on my path of self-development dealt with the topic of responsibility. The teachers at that time defined responsibility as being able, at all times and in all situations
- to articulate one's own needs without fear
- negotiating viable win-win solutions for the parties involved and, keeping in mind, the good of the greater whole
- making sure that one's needs were being met and, last but not least,
- taking responsibility for the results or the effects
Here are five vital ingredients in the cocktail of our blue-print of responsibility for us to pay special attention to:
- Are you fearless when it comes to articulating your own needs or are you conceding to someone-else's viewpoint or opinion too quickly?
- Are you reliable and dependable when it comes to being on time or keeping appointments and promises you made?
- Are you honest and authentic in all, even in uncomfortable situations, like having to renegotiate a commitment or a contract that you realize you will not be able deliver?
- Are you aware, respectful and considerate of others' needs and circumstance?
- Do you display maturity, rationality and sensibility when negotiating your personal needs?
All of the above aspects constitute responsibility. Being responsible translates into trust and trust into the essence through which true friendships and relationships, personal or professional ones, are built and maintained.
