No Two Eyes See The World Alike!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We live on the same planet but in different worlds!
Greetings!
Years ago, while still in the financial business making my living by selling real-estate and other financial products to high-net-worth clients, I went to a lot of sales and personality development workshop for the primary purpose of learning "how to make sales, how to handle objections and difficult clients, how to close deals, etc. etc." You, who are in marketing and sales, know all this. Already back then I personally never liked the word nor the action of selling something to somebody else very much. I always preferred educating my clients and giving them as much information as possible to help get them to a stage from where to make an educated decision for themselves. I educated and informed and then let go of it. I was unattached and neutral to the outcome and not coming from a position of lack or neediness.
At a very early stage in my career I learned that pushing, persuading and manipulating prospects was a very short sighted approach to building a following of loyal clients. It might bring short-term sales but it was not a solid foundation upon which to build a successful business. And I could witness it daily with my colleagues who were always complaining how hard life was. They were forever struggling to find new prospects, speak "new victims", because they could never go back a second time to do business with them. During the course of my career in the financial business, I built relationships with some 300+ clients; we were like a 'big Greek family'. They trusted me completely and I enjoyed working with and for them. It was a good, exciting, fun and prosperous time.
Going to all these sales trainings was actually the beginning of my personal journey on the path of self-discovery and personal development. After many years of working on myself in different disciplines and with different teachers, I happened to attend one of these sales trainings where I did not agree with the philosophy and the approach the trainer wanted us to adopt. Fearlessly and courageously I voiced my opinion. I will never forget what happened next! The trainer asked me in front of everyone: "Diana, what planet do you live on?" And I answered truthfully. It seemed that he (the trainer) and I were living on the same planet but in very different worlds.
And this brings me to the present moment! Recently, I have had several encounters with people who do not live in my world and do not share my reality. They see the world from a different perspective, from their reality. Some encounters were funny, others were not so pleasant. This caused me to revisit the subject of relationships, communication and last but not least, the question of responsibility. The questions I asked myself were:
- Are we responsible for other people's perception of us or not?
- Should we adjust our behavior or communication to match others' perception of us?
- Should we forsake our authenticity and integrity for the purpose of 'keeping peace', 'avoiding confrontation', 'avoiding change' or 'keeping the status quo'?
Since there are as many different realities out there as individual fingerprints, it is pretty safe to say that "no two people on this planet see the world alike". Ask someone to describe a scene in front of them and you will get as many different answers as many people you asked. Every day in our work, our business and our relationships we are being asked to communicate with people who perceive the world very differently from how we do. And their world is as real and valid to them as ours is to us.
Since every single person sees the world based on his or her unique perception, it might behoove us to contemplate and find an answer to the above questions. We might want to take a closer look at what perception is and, may be, develop a new mind- and skill-set to change and evolve our own perception.
Perception is nothing more or less but the physical manifestation of our very unique CPU. Our individual CPU is programmed with inherent individual, as well as collective beliefs, thoughts and perceptions - positive ones as well as negative ones. Our subconsciously held beliefs drive our perceptions, our perceptions drive our patterns of thinking and behavior and our emotional reactions.
I would like to offer an approach for your own personal growth and evolution. Since we cannot change other peoples' perception or reality, instead of placing the blame on the other party, take a good look at yourself first. The other person is holding a mirror up in front of you. He or she is showing you something about yourself which you, in all probability, do not know about or see in yourself. Ask yourself:
- What is it that I am asked to learn from this situation?
- What feelings of anger, fear, guilt, judgment are involved here?
- Have I been truthful, authentic and acted with integrity?
- Have my emotional blockages caused me to react to the situation or have I responded from a point of neutrality?
It is up to each of us to start the process of becoming more conscious through self-observation, reflection and healing. This process begins with releasing our limiting beliefs, lack of self-love and self worth, pride and ego through the conscious act of forgiveness - ourselves as well as others. How can we love or forgive others when we do not know how to love and forgive ourselves first?
Remember, it always takes two to Tango and the Universe has a very special knack of teaching us the lessons we need to learn in order to grow and evolve.
