In the summer of 2010, I was watching anonline live feed of the Unified Bouldering Comp in Salt Lake City when I instantly spotted Matt Fultz. The last time I had seen him was when he was 14 years old and he was winning the ABS comp at my climbing gym in Bend, OR. At the UBC, he was competing as one of the top 8 climbers, pulling down with the likes of Daniel Woods and Chris Sharma. Knowing that he came from a Christian family, I tracked him down and he agreed to be part of Solid Rock - Climbers for Christ.

Fast forward to the summer of 2011, Matt came along with my wife and I to be part of SR's presence at the International Climber's Festival. While there, he and I climbed together and I had a chance to see his love for Jesus and his incredible climbing strength as an adult. On our travels home, I felt prompted by God to explore with Matt the possibility of him being the first SRCFC's Sponsored Athlete.

Through a candid and open conversation, we came to see that a person in that position would first have to have a high level of Christian maturity, secondly have a heart for sharing the message of Christ with climbers and finally, be a super-strong climber. It became clear that Matt was willing to be accountable and was climbing at a level a sponsored climber would need to be.

So began a time of dialogue on specifics that has led Matt to officially come aboard as an SRCFC Sponsored Athlete. Our commitment to him is a few hundred dollars to cover travel expenses and event entry fees for national level events or visiting destination climbing areas. I believe these will be funds well spent!

To get to know Matt, visit his page on Solid Rock's website. There you will find an interview he did and links to his resume and article he recently authored for SRCFC's mailed newsletter. When he travels, his plans will be announced so members can connect with him.

Doubling SRCFC's Donor Base
$40 Given for Every NEW Donor by December 31, 2011!
Space Hauling by Tom Evans

Most often when climbers haul their gear up a big wall like El Cap, they use a simple 1 to 1 pulley system. This means that if the haul bag weighs a hundred pounds, one must pull down with a hundred pounds of force plus friction of the rock to raise the bag up. Most often during a two man ascent, the hauling is done by one person. That's one of the reasons why big wall climbing is so much work.

Occasionally though, climbing teams will be three people. That additional person can ease the work of hauling by becoming counter weight on the haul line, opposite the bag. In effect, they are doubling the efforts of one person hauling. (Learn more about hauling at Supertopo.)

From now to the end of the year, SRCFC is blessed with a donor who wants to get on a haul-line with you in terms of your giving to Solid Rock. He would like to change the fact that approximately only 17% of all Solid Rockers (375 out of 2250) have ever given any donation to help the mission of SRCFC happen. We don't have membership dues and therefore the only funding for the outreach work to climbers is through donations from you!

He knows that almost everyone who receives this e-newsletter can give something. And to encourage those who haven't, the special friend of SRCFC has pledged to give $40 for every new donor (and $10 for every existing donor).

To maximize this exceptional gift, we will need to double our donor base. Three hundred and seventy five donors is a huge number for an organization like SRCFC. But we can do it! Increase your gift by $40 by allowing this donor to get on haul-line with you. Can we count on you to give at least something by the end of 2011? The Good News of the gospel of Christ going to climbers depends upon your answer.
