Solid Rock Loves Climbers

by Nate Moore (See Bio and Picture Below)

On Saturday, May 7th, the Smith Rock Group, a non-profit group whose mission is maintaining the Smith Rock climbing areas, put on their 19th Annual Spring Thing. What makes the Spring Thing so much fun though is the attitude of the local climbers around Smith Rock. The climbing community is quite large but really has the feel of a large family. In addition to work projects there are many other activities as well. Breakfast snacks and coffee are provided, everybody gets a t-shirt, dinner is served and there's a raffle, an entertaining auction and a slide show.

Solid Rock also plays a key role in the event. They provide the coffee, bagels and fruit for breakfast, the food for the burrito feed that evening, and they have a giveaway. This event does not necessarily lend itself to quickly building strong relationships with other climbers or having spiritual conversations, but it does give a chance to meet many different people within the climbing community.

SRCFC makes a very strong and powerful statement through this event. This does not come through preaching, personal testimony or any single action. The statement comes from a continued dedication to the climbing community by local Solid Rockers led by Calvin Landrus. Calvin and the other Solid Rockers in the area are very active and are constantly showing acts of love to the climbing community. If Calvin and the other Solid Rockers in the area were to disappear today, it would leave a big hole in the climbing community. Everybody would notice and want to know what happened.

I believe this is a great indicator as to whether or not Solid Rock is doing its job or not. Does anybody know what Solid Rock Climbers for Christ is in your climbing community or not? Solid Rock does not have to be known as some group of annoying Christians. Just come check out the Smith Rock climbing community to see. Here Solid Rock plays an important role and people recognize its value. That does not mean that everybody in this community comes running to Solid Rock for every problem they have or that everybody agrees with all that Solid Rock stands for. But a clear message has been sent: Solid Rock loves climbers.

Nate and his wife Sarah are members of SRCFC.  They have been visiting with Calvin Landrus at SRCFC's National Office for the last couple of weeks. They are in the early steps of his new assignment with the Assemblies of God as a Climbing Chaplin. They have been discussing how they can effectively partner with SRCFC.  Pray for them as they define what their role will ultimately be and as they soon begin to raise support for their mission work to climbers.  And while here, they have been out at Smith Rock a lot.  In the past week, Nate sent his first 5.13a (Churning in the Wake) followed by two more 5.13 (Darkness at Noon and Aggro Monkey).

"anchoredman" book trailer

Pastor of Daybreak Church in Carlsbad, CA, Jason Graves, recently released a book called "anchoredman."  Before releasing it, Jason asked Calvin Landrus, SRCFC Director, to read it through for climbing accuracy and for a possible endorsement.  In the book, Jason presents five words that could save your life. You will find gripping stories of life and death adventures reveal vital lessons for becoming the strong leader and protector God created you to be. Through the analogy of building a rock-climbing anchor, you'll discover a realistic, step-by-step plan for staying anchored to God.  See a trailer video of book by Jason and Calvin's endorsement at www.anchoredman.com.  And while you are there, find an email address and send a note requesting a copy of the book as a member of SRCFC.  The first ten to do so will receive a free copy.  PS - Jason has been asked to be the speaker at our National Conference - West Coast in Yosemite, September 20-25. He will let us know soon if it will work into his responsibilities at church.

April 22-23: Limestoner Weekend by Roger Kubly (kublyr@hotmail.com)

No rope, no fear climbing! Does that describe climbing in Heaven?  It might, but it also describes Pace Bend Park, where climbing on the cliffs around Lake Travis (West of Austin) is an everyday matter.  Jason M., Joel S., and I started our Limestoner weekend there last week, enjoying a beautiful, hot, windy day climbing up and leaping off the cliffs around this uniquely created park.  We were quite worn out after several hours of attacking different parts of the walls, swimming in the pretty cool water, and being buffeted by a powerful wind.Because of the drought in Texas, the water is 23 feet lower than normal so even though the water is plenty deep in most parts, there are extensive areas of rock exposed along the sides. We had an enjoyable night of food, fellowship and a good night of rest before getting up early the next day to head over to Reimer's Ranch for the Limestoner competition. May 7: Texoma Chapter Gathering At Mineral Wells St Park by Bill Sharar(bsharar@verizon.net). The Lord really blessed the Gathering At Mineral Wells on Saturday, May 7.  The weather was perfect and the turnout good.   We had a number of routes set up including those for the mini-comp which were on easier routes.  Read more at www.srcfc.org/Events/Reports.

Now you get a chance to see up close the techniques used and witness the level of commitment required. Watch as four climbers leave behind the comforts of the Western World, are forced to separate real fear from irrational fear in an environment constantly out to test them.
