SRCFC Email Update - Volume 12,  Number 3 (Issue #205)         February 16, 2011

Former President Needs Our Support

Doug NideverOn January 27th, former President of SRCFC, Doug Nidever, was found on the floor of his home after having a heart attack and a stroke.  He was air-lifted to Renown Medical Center in Reno that night and doctors found extensive clotting in his body.  He has had surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and still in serious but stable condition.  Although not out of woods, he is progressing but will be facing a very long road to recovery.

Doug was a founding board member and the successor to Dan Freeman.  He filled the leadership vacuum in the aftermath of Dan's death (bicycle accident in Yosemite Valley in November of 1989) and implemented Dan's ideas into completed projects (e.g. initial t-shirts, the first magazine ads, second national conference).  Under Doug's watch Solid Rock became a full-fledged ministry with a national presence.

John Blaubach, SRCFC Treasurer, recalls, "I called his house and found out that earlier that day a climber 'somewhere' had seen one of the half page ads in Climbing, called the phone number (Doug's house) and accepted the Lord over the phone!"  Another early board member, Marty Snyder said, "Doug poured his life into Solid Rock."

After serving as President for about six years, Doug resigned to spend more time in the climbing community as a guide.  He has been guiding throughout the west and in Europe until his roommate found him unconscious on the floor.  If you read the postings on Facebook news page you will find the posts of well-known climbers like John Long and Kurt Smith.

After giving so much to SRCFC and to the climbing community, Doug is in need of SRCFC's support.  Please pray for a complete and quick recovery and for a minimal of discouraging moments along the way.  Also, please pray for Doug and his family and consider sending a card of encouragement.  The information for doing so is: Attn. Doug Nidever S-188, Renown Hospital, 1155 Mill ST, Reno, NV. 89502.  Finally, support him by giving towards his medical bills.  SRCFC has a benevolence fund to use in this situation and one Solid Rocker has already committed $1,000 to help Doug.  You can use any of the three ways to donate and you will receive a tax deductible receipt. (Please include a note or in the note/comments section that the gift is for benevolence fund - Doug Nidever.)

On behalf of the Nidever Family, thanks for your support!

"1727 V-Points" Climbed at the CMC

Chandler Mtn Challenge

The morning was very cold but we didn't mind because it was the first day in several that we had seen sunshine.  As Alabama Chapter Coordinator, Brad Killough, SRCFC Member, Ashley Holmes, and I were busy getting ready to make breakfast for those at Horse Pens 40 for the Chandler Mountain Challenge, I doubted we were going to have much of a turn-out.

On Friday afternoon before the event, we walked the boulder field at HP 40 in a constant light rain and viewed ice and snow sitting on top of many of the problems.  It become clear the even if it stopped raining during the night, as it was forecasted to do, the boulders wouldn't be climbable until at least late on Saturday.  So we announced on the website and on the event's Facebook page that we were postponing the event until Sunday.

Saturday night we still had a free dinner and presentation on climbing in Mexico.  We fed almost everyone camping at HP 40, which were around twenty people. Later, about a dozen returned to hear about some great climbing and more importantly about the Good News of Jesus.

On Sunday morning when I peeked out of my cabin, the sun was coming up and shining brightly.  Yes! We were going to have great day to climb, but how many would come out?  When the registration time opened, the stream of climbers signing up was not large but it turned out to be steady for almost two hours.  Thanks to your prayers, we had a super good turn-out with forty-four climbers registering.

After getting things all wrapped up with registration and breakfast, I headed out to record some v-points for the cause.  At one point, we stopped to work a couple of problems with a young couple and had a conversation with them.  I asked them about the Rock and Ice survey in issue #191 that said that only 39% of climbers believe in an afterlife.  They were surprised by that number but they asserted they didn't either.  Although there wasn't much more to that conversation than that, please know that they, along with all who registered, received the book of Luke in pocket format from the Outdoor Bible (thanks for you support) and one of SR's tracts.  Please pray for them and all who attended that the seeds sown will grow into fruit!

Not being much of boulderer, I had to work hard to climb 22 V-points (If one climbed a V2, they recorded 2 points on their scorecard.  V0 problems along with V1s counted as 1 point.)  When we totaled-up all the scorecards, the crew of climbers sent 1727 V-points.  Jason Silvey was the top point earner with 224 doing 65 problems.  Since everyone who climbed earned something, I would like to acknowledge all climbers and the points they climbed.

It seems that the changing of the Chandler Mountain Challenge from a competition to a bouldering benefit for climbupsokidscangrowup.com was a good direction.  The increase in attendance seemed to be connected to the fact that their climbing would be helping others.  Even though we were way over our committed maximum, due to the giving of so many of you and the support of Ascension and The Climbing Place gyms, we will be able to cover every V-point bouldered by a registered climber.  So we will be sending $1727 to buy medicine for African children through American Foundation for Children with AIDS
