Measuring Your Guerilla Index
By Calvin Landrus

As introduced in the last Update #199, many climbers believe that a positive ape index provides for an advantage and it probably does.  And I shared about the concept of "Guerrilla Lovers" as coined by Vince Antonucci.  He argues that just as a small group of people who deliver surprise attacks can change the course of a war, one can change the course of this world with revolutionary acts of compassion and love.  As active soldiers in the "lovefare" for climbers, we need a positive "Guerilla Index" to make a difference in the climbing community.

As I wrote in the last Update, "Guerilla Lover" approach is far more effective in the climbing community than "shock and awe."  We must be patient, relational and servant-hearted.  We need to love climbers "creatively, audaciously, consistently and persistently until they finally have to ask why." The reason we see the "tax collectors and sinners" always wanting to be around Jesus (Matthew 9:9-13) wasn't because He judged them and pointed out their sins, but because He loved them.  We need to have a positive "Guerilla Index" as Jesus did.

If you have read about ape indexes for climbers, it is debated whether of not you can increase your index.   However, this is not the same for your "Guerilla Index" with climbers; you can increase it for sure!  But first, you need to assess where you are right now.  Below are some actions that will add to your index and some that  will reduce it.  Please note that this not an exhaustive list and I have probably missed many great ones.  (Feel free to suggest more, by sending an email to calvin@srcfc.org.)

MEASURING YOUR GUERILLA INDEX WITH CLIMBERS

(NOTE: Climbers mentioned below are not in a relationship with Jesus Christ!)

Positives

____ Number of climbers whose name you have learned in the last 2 weeks.

____ Number of climbers you prayed for in the last week.

____ Number of conversions you had with climbers at you local climbing gym,

store or crag in the last week.

____ Number of climbers you have invited to your church in the past month.

         (Bonus Factor: Multiply times TWO!)

____ Number of times you climbed with unreached climbers in the past 2 weeks.

         (Bonus Factor: Multiply times TWO!)

____ Number of God Talks (see definition below) with climbers you have had in

the past month. (Bonus Factor: Multiply times FIVE!)

____ Number of planned, intentional and unexpected acts of God's love to

climbers in the past 2 weeks. (Bonus Factor: Multiply times TEN!).

Negatives

____ Number of times you have climbed with just Christian climbers

         in the past month.

____ Number of times you have made a climber feel like you were trying to "sell"

them Christianity in the past month.

____ Number of times you didn't respond to a climber's email, message or text

         in the past month.

WHAT IS YOUR SCORE?

Total your positives and then your negatives.  Add them together.  Hopefully you aren't below zero!  You might ask, "What is a good score?"  That is hard to definitively say but for an active Christian climber, twenty and above would be a good place to start.

HOW TO INCREASE YOUR SCORE?

Mostly it takes intentionality!  Take your eyes off your agenda and place it on others!  It involves looking beyond how climbers should live to seeing them living their lives in a love-relationship with Jesus.  The greatest "Bonus Factor" in my humanly-construed (meaning it should not be taken too seriously) Guerilla Index comes when you do planned, intentional and unexpected acts of God's love towards climbers.  So to close this article let me suggest several actions for you to do that fit into this category.  Once again this won't be a complete list but may jog loose something you could do.

  • Go to your local gym or crag and offer to be a belay slave.  (Note: It has to be a place you are known otherwise it would seem weird.)
  • Take a gianormous (defined on the web as "Used to describe something so uncommonly big that regular words just aren't enough") amount of pizza to your local climbing gym on a busy night.
  • Go to your local climbing shop and find a few items they haven't been able to sell.  Then buy at least one of those items.
  • Offer to carry a fellow climber's backpack to the crag.
  • Buy a box of chalk and distribute it at the crag or your climbing gym.
  • Take a climbing friend out to coffee, lunch or dinner.
DEFINITION OF A GOD TALK (by Steve Hughes, SRCFC Board Member and pastor of the Tribe of Jesus - www.tribeofjesus.org.) A "God Talk" is an ongoing conversation with a friend about issues of personal importance that leads to a spiritual trust & friendship. It is having a dialogue, not a debate, with friends where you guide them through a process of examining the reality of their beliefs and lifestyles by helping those friends discover for themselves the truth and power of God's Word and Jesus Christ through the Spirit.
"God's  Lake" Outreach Report
By Roger Kubly, Wisconsin & Central Texas Chapter Co-Coordinator

It was a gorgeous time to climb last weekend (Sept 24-26). Fall was just arriving in Wisconsin and God's paintbrush was beginning to scatter His brilliant colors throughout the park. God's Lake State Park (some less enlightened call it Devil's Lake).  Solid Rocker, Chris C. joined me on Friday night around a campfire as we brought each other up to date on our lives over the past year.  It was good to see each other again.

Saturday morning we went up to the main climbing area and started climbing near a couple (father and daughter) who turned out to be Christians.  We shared a bit with them and then moved down to some other areas where more people were climbing including a large group of students from Minnesota. We set up one rope (for toproping as almost all the climbing there is toproping) and then started to share with other climbers in that area.  About that time Reid S. also showed up.

We all had different conversations with people there, but I had a particularly interesting discussion with three of the students there, beginning with the question:  What is the most important question a climber should know the answer to?  Most people quickly propose questions of safety and security.  I said yes, it is important to know the quality of the equipment used to climb, the skill of the climber, the quality (or lack thereof) of the rock, and the reliability of the belayer.  All of these are good things to know about, but it still isn't the MOST important question!

Calvin and John Dargis
Calvin and John Dargis, May 2008

John Dargis, part of Solid Rock since 2006, had come face to face with death several times. John slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on September 27th at age 61 after a valiant 3 1/2 year battle with brain cancer.  One of his brushes with death reached mythical levels as the one who cut his rope above his rappel device while trying to get a shirt unstuck. Learn how that and other brushes with death lead him to Christ. The story entitled "There's Something There" which first appeared in a 2008 newsletter is being re-released at http://www.srcfc.org/Good-News/John-Dargis/.  To read his Christ-centered obituary, go to www.legacy.com/obituaries.

Solid Rockers Place at World Youth Championships
Solid Rocker, Collier Skinn 14 years old of Austin, TX, made it to the finals of the World Youth Championship this month in Edinburgh, Scotland.  He placed 7th in speed-climbing in Youth B.  As a member of the USA National team, Collier will be competing in the Pan American Games in Ecuador, November 24-28.  God's speed (no pun intended)!  Anak is the 14-year-old daughter of Wim & Patte Verhoeven of Belgium.  They are directors of a sister ministry in Europe called Christian Climbers.  She place 2nd in the world in Youth B of difficultly-climbing.  You can see her performance online at www.youtube.com.  SRCFC sends our congratulations their way and if you want to contact them directly they can be reached at courtneyskinn@yahoo.com and wim@christianclimbers.be, respectively.

2011 National Conference Locations and Dates Proposed
Our normal tradition is to have a National Conference on the West Coast and East Coast in odd years.  (We have one in the Rocky Mountains during the even years.) Our tentative thoughts are to have the East Coast N.C. at the Red River Gorge over Easter weekend (April 24th) and the West Coast N.C. in Yosemite around the 3rd week of September.  We realized that summer makes it better for families but harder to find climbing areas that have comfortable temperatures for climbing.  Feel free to give you feedback on this proposal at info@srcfc.org.

Worship Video Released by An Epic, No Less
Daniel Chancellor (daniel@soillholds.com) of SoIll Climbing Holds is part of a band called An Epic, No Less.  The group has recently released a video off their first album called "We are an Echo of Love."  You can view it at vimeo.com - Daniel is the drummer.  The whole album is available for download at anepicnoless.bandcamp.com for a "name your price" donation.  Daniel says "We feel like God gave the music to us, so we want others to have it as well."
