Having a Positive Guerilla Index!
By Calvin Landrus

In the bios of many climbers, mainly boulderers, they often list their "ape index."  The largest indoor climbing gym in Arizona is called Ape Index. Do you even know what an "ape index" is?  According to Wikipedia, an "ape index, or ape factor, is a measure of the ratio of an individual's arm span relative to their height. A typical ratio is 1, as identified by the Roman writer, architect and engineer Vitruvius prior to 15 BC. Vitruvius noted that a "well made man" has an arm span equal to his or her height, as exemplified in Leonardo da Vinci's drawing, the 'Vitruvian Man'."

Generally, climbers find their ape index by subtracting a person's height from their fingertip-to-fingertip span, usually expressed in inches. For example, I'm a six feet tall with a span of six feet, one inch, giving me an ape index of plus one inch.

Many climbers believe that a positive ape index provides for an advantage and it probably does.  However, I'm sure that having a positive "Guerilla Index" will make a difference in the climbing community.  I'm not talking an index abround animal in the jungle (gorilla) but a person in the battle.  Let me explain what this looks like.

The concept of "Guerrilla Lovers" has been coined by Vince Antonucci.  He is the founder and lead pastor of Verve, an innovative new church for the unchurched on the Las Vegas strip.  His idea is to change the world by doing "Guerrilla Lovefare."  Just as a small group of people who deliver surprise attacks can change the course of a war, one can change the course of this world with revolutionary acts of compassion and love.

Vince shares in an interview on edstetzer.com, "I think there are two types of war - "shock and awe" and "guerrilla warfare." Shock and awe is employed when you're bigger and stronger than your opponent, so you stay at a distance, hoping to bomb your enemy into quick submission. Guerrilla warfare happens when you're under-manned, under-resourced. It requires intelligence and creativity. You have to get close so you can pull off ambush attacks. It's a patient strategy where you realize you'll have to hit your opponent repeatedly before they finally decide it's not worth it to continue fighting. I'm advocating that we start relying on guerrilla tactics."

In my experience, using the "Guerilla Lover" approach is far more effective in the climbing community than "shock and awe."  We must be patient, relational and servant-hearted.  We need to love climbers "creatively, audaciously, consistently and persistently until they finally have to ask why." The reason we see the "tax collectors and sinners" always wanting to be around Jesus (Matthew 9:9-13) wasn't because He judged them and pointed out their sins, but because He loved them.  We need to have a positive "Guerilla Index" as Jesus did.  We need to be active soldiers in "lovefare."

In the next Email Update, #200, I will share about how to measure your "Guerilla Index" with climbers and how to increase it.  And a few ways to decrease your index.  If you have some suggestions for either increasing or decreasing your index, please reply to this email.
"Beat the Heat #5" Outreach Report
By Kristin Anderson, SRCFC Board Member and Mid-Atlantic Chapter Coordinator

It was a great day!  I could feel the energy as I pulled up to the gym in my car.  There were vendors/sponsors unloading and climbers getting psyched for the competition.  I was a little bummed that I didn't have any planned company at the table all day, but I knew that God was there with me, and figured He might have a couple of cool things up His sleeve.

I didn't have a table, but I brought a folding chair, two sawhorses, a piece of plywood and a funky old curtain for a table cloth.  I ended up with a great looking table at a prime location where everyone would walk by - way to go God!   On one side of me was Mid-Atlantic Climbers, who I know pretty well from the gym and from local Adopt-A-Crag events, and who I am looking forward to working with more.   On the other side of me was the Mary Kay table... it was a very pretty setup, but they didn't stick around all day- I'm afraid climbers are not their best clientele!

I enjoyed visiting with old friends and making new ones, while watching the competition in the background.  The cool part for me was having a great platform to share about Christ with past students, co-workers, and climbing partners who I had already developed rapport with, but who did not know that I was a believer.  I had three pretty deep conversations with other Christians about God's faithfulness in their lives, and their passion for missions.

There were about 10-15 people who were interested in learning more about Solid Rock, and a few who seemed as if they might like to get involved.  We had 35 people enter the gear give-away, and also gave out a DVD and donated a rope (thanks SRCFC!) as one of the big prizes at the end of the night.  Both prizes actually ended up going to people that I had at least 3-4 conversations with throughout the day... I love how God works :)

I had texted everyone I could in the morning to ask them to stop by, and one friend did come in time to watch finals and help me break down the table.  However, another old friend (Will) who helped out at the same event 3 or 4 years ago happened to be there just to support a friend and wasn't climbing.  So it was great to catch up, and he was happy to keep me company and cover the table for a while so I could grab some dinner.  Things wound down at the tables around 8:00pm, and I was able to go and watch some of the finals.  I confess that I'm not much of a boulderer, so it was amazing to watch what some of those kids are capable of- wow!!

All in all, it was a fun time, and it showed me how important it is to show up to events like that, even if I'm the only one there.  It's awesome for folks to know that there is a Christian presence in the local climbing community.  Christians can find fellowship, and others have a place to go for answers when things are tough, and when the Holy Spirit brings conviction on their hearts.  To God be the glory!

100 Tents for Shelter in Pakistan
100 Tents
International Mountain Leadership Institute (IMLI), an organization we have partnered with in the past, has been active in the areas devastated by recent flooding Pakistan and India since 2003.  They have sent Everett Miller (the CFR director) into Pakistan with $7000 to buy tarps, tents, etc. and chose a few villages to minister in. Recently, they posted on their Facebook page that tents have been distributed. On the day that one of the families put up their tent, it rained; it was first time in a month they stayed dry.  In the Ladakh region, two IMLI CFR instructors have been invited back in an area where they had previously done first aid classes. In April, the two young ladies trained a group of 8 women in a village a few hours outside of Leh.  The village and the valley were 100% Muslim except for one household.  The village gave the ladies and their translator a very, very cold reception.  That same valley was severely hit by the flooding and guess who they called? The director of IMLI, Jeremy Higle, said, "This disaster is being used to till up some very hard soil and open doors in communities that are very hard."
