Client taking trained dog for walk in the park
Greetings!

This is a BIG day for Partners Dog Training School.
We are finally bringing our *NEW* NEWSLETTER and EMAIL Notification System online.
Last year during our 15th Anniversary, I announced we had big changes coming, and here they are.
Months of behind the scenes work, rebuilding our websites, upgrading our databases, photos of dogs in training, writing copy and much more.

ALL SO WE CAN EVEN BETTER SERVE YOU!

Our beta test went well, so TODAY is the big day.
We are sending this newsletter to ALL 3,594 email email addresses we have.
We hope you will find it interesting, thought provoking and useful.
I personally hope that it will improve your, as well as your dogs life, making all of us better people.
We are open to suggestions, so if you have any comments, please let us know.

Thanks for making Partners the most awesome school in the world.

And thanks for being such awesome clients, friends and associates.

  • Current students will be able to receive TRAINING notes from their instructors on homework, practice and tips on training.
  • We will be able to help dogs find new homes through our notification system.
  • And finally, we will be able to respond to online inquries more effectively, allowing people better choices and timely information.
  • To say we are excited is an understatement!

KIDS AND DOGS
Do you have a child? We know you have a dog!
We would love to see more kids in training with the family pet.
Kids, get your folks to bring you along, and learn how to enjoy your dog.
Remember there is no happier companion, than a dog.
And remember if you have a friend or family member that wants to watch training, they are WELCOME to come. Even if they are a distraction, remember we are a school, and dogs need to learn to work under distraction.
So bring 'em on. We love a challenge!

Kids walking into danger Summer is upon us. (What happened to winter?) And with summer comes the risk of snakebite. At Partners we take these things very seriously, and want to see your dog given the tools to protect them from snake bites. Schedule an appointment right NOW, as classes are filling fast.
It only takes a few minutes, and YES, it can save their lives.
And in case you are worried about your beloved pup. Rest assured, it does not hurt. All they get is a fright and its over.  Dozens of dogs are bitten every year! Many die! Don't let yours be one.

TRAINING TIP OF THE WEEK
There are multiple factors that make training your dog successful. Practice, consistency, patience. But by far the most important is TIMING!
You can be the worst "parent" in the world, but if your timing is good, your dog will learn.
This applies not only to correcting an inappropriate behavior, but especially to REWARD.
Motivation is great, but the timing of it has to be consistent with the behavior.
If your timing is just a little off, then the reward, or correction, is of little value.
Correcting a dog when they jump on you, after they are already standing with both paws planted on your chest; means nothing. Your "body" has to signal its disapproval as the behavior occurs, or sometimes even when the thought enters your dogs head.
So next time you train, really work on your timing!

LATE BREAKING NEWS
As I was finalizing this newsletter, I realized something.
During interviews on TV/radio over the past 24 hours I have talked about the need for people to educate themselves about what the signs of danger are in a dog.
This obviously is a result of the little girl that lost her life when the family Chow Chow bit her in the head.
Allegedly no prior history or warning signs.
So what are the warning signs. How do you tell if you, or a friend, or a family member, has a dangerous dog.
So I stopped the newsletter, went back and wrote down all the visual cues I could think about that could indicate a dangerous dog.
Please understand this is not to pick on any breed, dog or pet.
Rather its my way of educating you, and others, so that these cases can be prevented. And of course, one has to look at the big picture. Just because a dog is insecure, does not make them bad.
And please say a prayer for the little girl that shared our world for two short weeks, and lost her life to an animal that was supposed to protect her. My condolences to her parents!

Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter.
If you have any suggestions, comments or ideas, I would love to hear them.

Have a "doggone good day" mate!

Leighton

Why Dogs Kill!
A 2 week old infant was killed by the family pet this week.
Why do dogs do this? Can it be prevented? Training Director Leighton Oosthuisen appeared on Channel 5 TV, and also on KTAR radio discussing this case.
Should parents be held accountable?
Should the breed be banned?

Run for your Dog
You've heard Cesar talk about it!
You've heard us talk about it.
You talk about it every year on New Years eve.
(Just after the kiss!)
So maybe its time to do it.

I challenge every dog owner to run, or walk, with their dog/s once a week.

It builds trust, establishes good routines, tests your dogs ability to behave under distraction, and of course it is great exercise for you.

And for those of you that are like me and need a little motivation.
Once you have trained your dog to go running, you will not easily stop them!
They will hound you!
