Systech BEYOND VISION
Intelligence for the Pharmaceutical Industry
Volume 1
  Issue 2
September 2009

Dear ,

Systech International customers use our products to address a broad spectrum of packaging challenges.  Each issue of Systech's newsletter "Beyond Vision" has an overall theme or area of interest addressing these challenges.  The goal is to provide timely and relevant information to our customers and other stakeholders.

In this issue, we focus on serialization.

Significant serialization requirements are approaching or within most strategic planning horizons.  With the current need to rationalize packaging capacity and drive towards lean principles, serialization must be viewed from a total cost of ownership stand point.  This requires addressing near term local requirements by deploying technology that supports an enterprise's global serialization strategy.

I hope you find this useful.  If you have any comments or suggestions regarding this or future editions, please drop a note to newsletter@systech-tips.com

 Regards,

Feature Article: Serialization Requires a New Architecture

Bi-Direct2Regulatory requirements driving serialization are generally based on a Pedigree model (U.S. and more specifically, California), Track and Trace model (Turkey and it's "Pharmaceuticals Track and Trace System") or an Authentication (EFPIA's Swedish pilot) model.  These models have different impacts on the drug supply chain, but all require item-level serialization in packaging.  Manufacturers universally recognize serialization needs new coding, vision inspection and material handling technology on the packaging line.  There is also agreement that serial numbers are managed at the enterprise level.  What is often overlooked when manufacturers start to plan for serialization is the need for bi-directional communication between the enterprise information technology (IT) and packaging environment.....

New Release, V 7.32 of Systech's Serialization Solution

New release, V 7.32, is Systech's third generation of its Serialized Product Tracking (SPT) application.  It includes enhancements to Systech Advisor SPT and Systech Guardian SPT.

Systech has added functionality to support "near line" use cases.   They include serialization activities that take place within packaging but after product has been removed from the line and the line has been cleared.

The latest release also includes functionality to aid information technology (IT) organizations develop and test Guardian SPT configurations that move data between the packaging environment and the enterprise IT environment.  The new functionality emulates Advisor SPT on the line for testing purposes without impacting line availability or line utilization.

New Systech-Sharp Serialization Case Study Now Available

SharpeSys
Sharp provides contract packaging for manufacturers.  With over 75 customers, the company on average handles 10 or more products and various different package configurations on any given day.  Sharp decided to look for a packaging information management platform that would ensure protection of their customers' products while optimizing their packaging services offering.  A solution would have to be flexible and easily configurable to handle the demands of their environment.  Due to the requirements of their contract packaging environment, they selected Systech's productized Packaging Execution System (PES) platform.

"Our customers rely on us to execute projects to their quality as well as to our standards and to sometimes tackle the packaging challenges they haven't yet tried internally.  We normally don't have time to customize and re-integrate lines for each new product configuration.  We need nimble lines that can be set-up and configured quickly and change over in minutes versus hours."

--Rick Seibert, Vice President of Business Development at Sharp Corporation.

Reading Data Matrix on Round Objects

Reading data matrix codes on round objects at typical line speed is problematic.  Round objects typically cannot be oriented as they move through the packaging line.  Without orientation, inline readers cannot reliably locate and scan the data matrix code.  This is a significant challenge when serialized round objects must read prior to aggregation into bundles and cases for tracking purposes.

To address this challenge, Systech will be announcing Sentri 360 DMR. It is a compact, robust and innovative solution for reading data matrix code on round, un-oriented objects.  By combining multiple, high resolution cameras with advanced detection and resolution software, Sentri 360 DMR can reliably decode data matrix codes at speeds in excess of 5 units per second.  The system can handle a variety of sized objects without requiring operator adjustments

Sentri 360 DMR is designed and built as an independent system with easy integration with Systech Advisor line management products.

Customer Support and Service Level Agreements

Our customers face unique challenges every day and require top-tier customer support. Systech offers it's customers an option to enroll in a Full Service Level Agreement (SLA).  This SLA option is available for all SPT/Guardian and Systech System Software Version 7.x customers. It provides 24 x 7 technical support access (including weekends and holidays), discounted training, software upgrades and a software escrow program.

Systech has resources in place in New Jersey (US), Belgium and the United Kingdom to support the growing number of packaging lines worldwide. The support team interfaces with Systech's Product Development, Professional Services, Central Engineering and Product Management groups in order to provide timely resolution of customer issues.
