Where Two Rivers Meet A Confluence of Activity on the Lower Deschutes The Deschutes River tumbles into the great Columbia River at Biggs Junction, where basalt canyons tower 1,000 feet overhead, and a sense of calm inevitability rises from the land. Where these two rivers meet, however, turmoil lies just below the surface.
The warmer water of the Columbia mixes with the cool current of the Deschutes, creating a portal for salmon to return from the sea to their native waters. In addition, the Deschutes drops over 1,200 feet in the length of 100 miles, making it a premier whitewater rafting destination. For a more sublime experience of the Lower Deschutes, a wide trail built on over old railroad line lets you travel 17 miles by foot, mountain bike, or horse, along the river. The immutable journey of the Deschutes River takes it on a collision course with the Columbia River, which then flows into the Pacific Ocean. Where will the Deschutes take you? Why do Salmon Migrate? As "small fry," rainbow trout migrate to the deep blue sea where they grow to an average of 15-20 pounds. One-three years later, they return as "steelhead," making the desperate, arduous journey back to the stream where they were born, to reproduce.
